Director of Player Development

High Point University’s Athletic department is seeking a Director of Player Development. This assistant coach position will develop, execute, and manage programming, events, and initiatives to support student-athlete development in the High Point University Athletics’ Women’s Basketball Program. This position will play an integral role in development and enhancement of the student-athlete experience and will have direct oversight over the program’s community outreach initiatives. They will also provide in the assistance and development of players’ skills on the court.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; master’s degree preferred. 

Experience and Training

  • NCAA playing/coaching experience strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, Ability:

  • Knowledge of NCAA Division I Athletics and specifically basketball. 
  • Must be proficient in the technical knowledge of the sport. 
  • Confident and capable of mentoring student-athletes in managing academic, athletic, and social responsibilities. 
  • Must also possess strong written and interpersonal communication skills.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES :  

  • On court and basketball specific duties
    • On court duties include assisting the head coach in conducting practices.
    • Providing basketball instruction
    • Conducting individual workouts for players
    • Assisting in scouting reports for future opponents
    • Film review with individual players.
  • Player Development and Alumni Relations
    • Foster meaningful relationships and build trust with student-athletes through intentional and planned interactions.
    • Coordinate and implement programs and initiatives focused on the development of the student-athletes in order to succeed in all aspects of their college experience, including promoting healthy behavior and effective lifestyle choices and helping student-athletes prepare for a successful life after college basketball.
    • Monitor, assess and report on the needs of student-athletes through regular and frequent check-ins.
    • Manage resources that encourage and support student-athlete alumni networking and mentorship opportunities. 
    • Develop resources for students on a range of issues including career planning, identity development, community standards, intergroup communication and dialogue, accessibility, and more to assist them in making appropriate choices and decisions.
    • Develop collaborative relationships with High Point University departments to refer and provide resources to student-athletes on individual needs, as appropriate.
  • Marketing and Fan Experience
    • Serve as the Women’s Basketball liaison to external relations, equipment room, and other Athletics Department groups. Interact and engage with High Point University faculty.
    • Cultivate interactions with students on campus, including development of student section at home games.
    • Work in partnership with marketing and the ticket office to develop strategic initiatives around attendance, fan experience, and engagement with the program, including themes at games.
  • Community Outreach
    • Oversee and manage program community outreach.
    • Engage the High Point University Women’s Basketball Program in community activities. Maintain records of activities, community service and life skills sessions/hours completed. 
    • Assist with coordinating student-athlete speaking engagements and appearances at events. 
  • Women’s Basketball Managers
    • Oversee, supervise, and monitor performance of WBB managers.

ACCOUNTABILITY:

  • Reports to Head Coach of Women's Basketball.
  • Additionally, this position must comply with University policies and procedures, NCAA and Big South rules and regulations.
