Scope of Responsibilities 

The Director for New Student & Family Programs (NSFP), Associate Dean of Students provides leadership to multiple departmental units that include first-year, transfer, incoming student communication, families, and visiting international students. The Director leads the matriculation process for new undergraduates and assists in program design and services for new student populations that assist with the successful matriculation, transition, and acclimation as members of the Duke community. Specifically, this role serves as our institutional leader for onboarding new members of the student community and introducing university and divisional values in the areas of holistic wellness, diversity, equity, and meaningful inclusion. Overseeing the implementation of our matriculation programs the Director must excel in developing a sense of belonging, establishing community, integrity, ethics, and deep reflection among students to determine purpose and meaning.  This position supervises both professional, graduate-level and student staff members on the New Student & Family Programs team.

  • Provide leadership in translating values of holistic wellness, diversity, equity, inclusion, community, and sense of belonging for the institution to new student members.
  • Oversee matriculation, communication, and transition programs for incoming undergraduates. Oversee parent and family programs for the undergraduate community including Family Weekend and Parent Orientation.

  • Chair Orientation Steering Committee, the New Student Communicators group, and the Duke Common Experience Committee. These committees are all designed to facilitate reflection and challenge both faculty/staff and our incoming students to meaningfully consider their values, ethics, and integrity associated with the most meaningful of local, national, and global challenges.

  • Collect data, prepare, and distribute statistical reports regarding key programmatic areas; analyze trends from collected data

  • Manage, develop and implement risk mitigation plans for experiential orientation programs; work with program students and co-advisors to evaluate mitigation

  • ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Recruit, hire, train, on-board, and supervise professional and para-professional staff and supervise staff.

  • Oversee the production of the Blue Book

  • Create, revise, and oversee university policies, practices, and procedures in key program areas related to new student orientation

  • Coordinate and oversee New Student & Family Programs budget

  • Serve as the university’s “Dean on Call” in a 24-hour emergency on-call rotation; respond to crisis situations involving students

  • Review annual Orientation Week assessment with university offices that host programs during Orientation Week

  • ADVISING

  • Advise student leaders of our experiential orientation programs which include community service, ethical inquiry, academic exploration, holistic wellness, and outdoor adventures among others.

  • Advise professional staff in translation of University and Divisional values to their experiential orientation programs including holistic wellness (which includes: spiritual, intellectual, mind-body, environmental, social, and financial), diversity, equity, and meaningful inclusion.

  • CONSTITUENT OUTREACH

  • Serve as liaison to university departments

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for new undergraduate students including special populations such as international visiting students, domestic exchange students, transfer students, and regular degree-seeking undergraduates.

  • Represent the New Student & Family Programs office on select departmental and divisional committees as well as at national conferences and professional meetings.

  • OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED

  • General Qualifications

    Work requires a Master's degree in higher education/student services, counseling, or related area and at least six years of related experience in building community, sense of belonging, supporting holistic wellness, program administration or involving academic, instructional or counseling activities to acquire skills necessary to plan, coordinate, administer and implement a variety of programs, activities and events.

    Job-Specific Skills and Competencies

    • Ability to provide guidance and direction to subordinates, including setting standards and monitoring performance.
    • Skills using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions to problems.
    • Skills evaluating program performance, summarizing findings, communicating results, and forming an action plan.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    Work requires a Master's degree in higher education/student services, counseling, or related area required.

    Master's Degree and 6+ years of related experience
