Scope of Job
Serve as the leader of the Mathematics and Science Academy (MSA), providing oversight for its instructional program, operations, and compliance with all University and TEA policies and regulations.
Description of Duties
  • Directs, manages, and coordinates the day-to-day operations of the Mathematics and Science Academy.
  • Works with the MSA Advisory Board and senior leadership at UTRGV to evaluate MSA and ensure alignment of MSA vision, mission, and strategies with the needs of the Rio Grande Valley and those of the larger institution.
  • Manages and supervises creation and implementation of effective and clear policies and procedures for the operation of MSA.
  • Ensures all MSA operations, policies, procedures, and practices are in alignment with state and federal rules and regulations, as well as those of the University.
  • Coordinates with and leverages institutional infrastructure, processes, and resources to recruit and support MSA students.
  • Collaborates with University and other relevant stakeholders to provide innovative programming and experiences that will attract and retain top students to MSA and to continue their studies at UTRGV after graduation.
  • Tracks, analyzes, and reports student data (e.g. enrollment, attendance, and student success data) required by UTRGV leadership, TEA, and other state/federal authorities.
  • Closely monitors and provides leadership and accountability for student management, including monitoring student attendance and overseeing disciplinary issues.
  • Displays the highest ethical and professional behavior and standards when working with students, parents, UTRGV personnel, and other partners/stakeholders.
  • Establishes and promotes high standards and expectations, as well as a climate of respect, for all students and staff.
  • Prepares and manages departmental budget.
  • Hires, supervises, and evaluates MSA staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervision Received
General supervision from assigned supervisor.
Supervision Given
Exercises general supervision over managerial, supervisory, technical and clerical staff.
Required Education
Master’s degree from an accredited university.
Preferred Education
Graduate degree in a math or science-related discipline. Ph.D. or Ed.D. from an accredited university.
Licenses/Certifications
Valid Principal Certification.
Required Experience
Three (3) years of experience as a high school/middle school principal or assistant principal and three (3) years teaching experience in an accredited public-school classroom. Strong communications, public relations, leadership, and interpersonal skills.

Use of standard office equipment.
Working Conditions
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Essential and marginal functions require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, standing, or walking for prolonged periods of time; general manual dexterity. Office Environment; some travel and weekend work is required.
