University Marketing Strategy


Job Summary

The Director of Marketing & Communications is responsible for planning, organizing, creating and executing marketing activities to achieve strategic goals in the College of Health Sciences and Technology (CHST) and the School of Individualized Studies (SOIS). They will manage the production of a wide range of strategic marketing and communications efforts that effectively advance the missions of both CHST and SOIS.

The Director of Marketing & Communications leads the development and implementation of a strategic, comprehensive, and integrated marketing and communication plan through close partnership with leadership, faculty, and staff in CHST, SOIS, the Division of Enrollment Management (EM), and the Division of Marketing and Communications (M&C). The Director of Marketing & Communications will manage all aspects of marketing and communications for CHST and SOIS by leveraging M&C’s marketing intelligence, branding, creative and video services, web services, strategic best practices and other services provided by the Division. The Director of Marketing & Communications will build and manage long-term relationships among faculty, staff, and alumni; provide consultation on strategic marketing and communications initiatives; develop and execute marketing communication strategies including events; and evaluate performance of all efforts for continuous improvements. The Director of Marketing & Communications is also expected to support the university brand initiatives and contribute to its awareness and integrity. The Director of Marketing & Communications will support programmatic and enrollment growth efforts by planning and deploying publications, advertising, event marketing, and digital and analog promotion activities and elevating the visibility to external and internal audiences of both CHST and SOIS. The Director of Marketing & Communications will be an effective leader, able to listen and prioritize, and proactively communicate priorities to colleagues in CHST and SOIS.

The Director of Marketing & Communications for CHST and SOIS will report to the Associate Vice President of Marketing Strategy within the Division of Marketing & Communications, with a permanent office space in CHST and a hoteling office space in SOIS. Budget resources for initiatives will come from within the individual college frameworks in CHST and SOIS. This unique structure will allow the Director of Marketing & Communications to be mentored through the central division while providing strategic support and marketing execution for two of RIT’s college communities. Annual performance evaluations will include input and guidance from the Division of Marketing & Communications as well as the Deans from CHST and SOIS.


Job Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the planning and execution of marketing programs and existing services from start to finish
  • Foster a partnership within both CHST and SOIS among faculty and staff, and between CHST, SOIS and university partners to include but not limited to M&C, Enrollment Management, Alumni Relations, Career Services, and Advancement.
  • Conceptualize and execute on multi-channel campaigns across the customer lifecycle, ensuring the alignment of communications and messaging across all traditional and non-traditional channels, including internal communications (email, posters, digital displays, in-person events)
  • Manage the brand integrity within each college by encouraging everyone to adopt a consistent and compelling brand message, look, and feel that promotes awareness of RIT, CHST, and SOIS.
  • Support programmatic and enrollment growth efforts by planning and deploying publications, advertising, and promotion activities including support of open house events with the goal of elevating the visibility of  the academic, research, and outreach programs within CHST and within SOIS to external and internal audiences.
  • Make recommendations related to marketing budget expenditures and manage spending as necessary.
  • Use data-driven information for planning and executing integrated marketing communication activities.
  • Support internal marketing and communications with current students to deepen student loyalty, support student success and retention, and to foster strong relationships with future alumni and their “home” academic unit of either CHST or SOIS.
  • Maintain knowledge of competitive academic, research, and outreach programs and their offerings with a goal to increase the effectiveness of outreach conducted at the undergraduate and graduate levels for both CHST and SOIS.

Required Qualifications

  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in marketing and communications 
  • Must be proactive

  • Must have excellent communication skills including interpersonal, presentation, and listening skills.
  • Must have demonstrable problem-solving skills.
  • Must be able to interpret data and synthesize trends.
  • Must have a proven ability to work with a variety of constituents and stakeholders to achieve goals.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and as a contributor to team efforts.
  • Willingness and ability to learn and understand the academic, research, and outreach programs of the College of Health Sciences and Technology and School of Individualized Studies
  • Skilled at organizing projects, handling multiple tasks simultaneously, meeting deadlines.
  • Demonstrated success in digital and traditional media.
  • Commitment to quality productions.
  • Maintain a customer-service attitude.
  • Continually stay up-to-date with skills and knowledge relative to the position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree/MBA preferred
  • Previous experience in higher education marketing and/or communication preferred.
