The Director of Library Services sets goals and creates strategic plans and policy for the library. Manages library staff, budget, and resources and communicates with administration.

The hiring range for this position is $79,790.00 - $102,969.50. Offers are determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to: geographical location, knowledge, skills, years & depth of experience, and equity with internal team members.

TYPE OF SUPERVISION: 

Receive general direction from the Executive Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs/Provost.

  • General Direction — indicates that the incumbent receives guidance in terms of broad goals and overall objectives and is responsible for establishing the methods to attain them. Generally, the incumbent is in charge of an area of work; and typically formulates policy for this area but does not necessarily have final authority for approving policy.

POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

Leadership

  • Oversee staff day to day responsibilities, establish a highly motivated work environment, monitor staff performance, and create opportunities for professional growth and development. 
  • Develop and implement intentional and inclusive initiatives aligned with the University's strategic plan as outlined in the mission and vision statement. 
  • Develop and implement a system for assessing library use and effectiveness (Key Performance Indicators) providing regular reporting for continuous improvement.
  • Build and sustain a process-managed organization and culture that delivers state of the art user experience by delivering measurable value. 
  • Develop, implement, and maintain departmental policies and procedures.

Strategic and Budgetary Management 

  • Set library direction through strategic planning and goal setting.
  • Lead project planning for teaching/training and the curation of content, including digital resources and special collections, based on needs, research and subscription requirements.
  • Collaborate with schools to assess needed resources for diverse programs and make budgetary recommendations to enhance the collection and materials.  
  • Manage library budget and resources.
  • Manage library contracts.   Evaluate resources, including but not limited to, assessing the business need for new purchases and current subscriptions, and maintaining collections. 
  • Develop responsive strategies to increase student engagement with library resources.
  • Lead library staff in technology and innovation to create an extraordinary user experience in services and programs. 
  • Develops and executes summative/longitudinal assessments of library resources and services.
  • Lead the ethical development, implementation, and assessment of programming, activities, and projects designed to improve the overall user experience of the Library.

Collaboration

  • Develop and implement programs to enhance library services in accordance with priorities driven by faculty, student need and university leadership. 
  • Create accessible content that initiates and supports our diverse population of users in concert with the Office of Equity and Inclusion and the Office of Accessible Education.
  • Collaborate with the Instructional Design team and Course Developers to embed library resources in courses.  
  • Assumes editorial responsibility for original library instructional content.
  • Provide one-on-one support to staff, students, faculty and leadership. Collaborate with appropriate staff to maintain library resources on the website and in the databases.

Library Technology 

  • Oversee adoption of library technology.
  • Maintain currency in the field of library technology and create a plan for innovation in library services and resources and create professional development for librarians and users as needed. 
  • Expertise in database management across a variety of database options. 
  • Engage with users across the university to provide data services, live webinars/trainings, video tutorials, job aids and easy to use templates. 
  • Manage relationships/contracts with key vendors for library services and technology. 
  • Organize workflow for tracking of a diverse variety of materials in all formats, including books, journal articles, software, interlibrary loans, research guides and databases.  
  • Manage the technology used to schedule librarians, track student services, build a remote team, collaborate across the university, etc.
  • Stays updated on the latest trends, best practices, and advancements in academic librarianship to ensure the delivery of relevant and effective library services.
  • Perform other duties, as assigned

POSITION SPECIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATION AND/OR LICENSES:

  • Master’s degree in Library Services or Master’s degree in Library Information Science from ALA approved program at an accredited university required.  
  • 3-5 years of demonstrated leadership skills and a history of progressively increasing levels of management responsibility in a library at a higher education institution. Virtual library experience at a Nonprofit, higher-education institution, preferred. 
  • 3-5 years’ experience efficiently and effectively managing a library budget. 
  • History of collaborative leadership with proven ability to work effectively with multiple stakeholders to build consensus; demonstrated expertise in diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and proven success in advancing diversity goals.
  • Computer literate and technologically adept. Proficiency in MS Office Suite, Google Suite, and Outlook. Interest and ability to evaluate and learn new technology as needed. 
  • Functional experience with Aleph and/or Alma ILSs and EBSCO Discovery Service and/or Primo VE; understanding of cataloging principles and experience manipulating and batch loading MARC record files.

  • Evidence of excellent analytical, organizational, project management, and problem-solving skills; evidence of ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Experience designing and delivering instructional content and public services in university or community college libraries.
  • Knowledge of fully online, blended, self-paced, and video-supported programs/curriculum learning and ability to design programs that embed connected learning principles and best practices in community assessment and engagement.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively with technology in a fast-paced environment while managing competing priorities.
  • Working knowledge/recent experience of basic library procedures related to circulation, serials control, interlibrary loan and disposal of library materials Knowledge of research catalogs, repositories, and applications; strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to produce or present summaries or other reports. 
  • Maintains knowledge and engages in continuous professional development to maintain currency with trends in emerging technologies, digital tools, and scholarly communication issues.
  • Willingness to learn new things and the curiosity to explore and innovate.
