Job Description


Reporting to the Senior Director of Support Services in Technology-enhanced Learning and Online Strategies (TLOS), the Director of Learning Technologies Support leads a team of specialists who provide faculty-facing services for all TLOS-supported tools and platforms, including Virginia Tech’s learning management system (Canvas), video conferencing platform (Zoom), video content management system (Kaltura), blogging platform (WordPress), and numerous other teaching and learning technologies. The successful candidate must have a holistic understanding of Virginia Tech’s digital learning ecosystem and its underlying technologies (e.g., the Learning Tools Interoperability standard), the ability to focus deeply on specific platforms and tools, and a passion for understanding and meeting the needs of instructional faculty.

For each of TLOS's key platforms, the Director of Learning Technologies Support personally performs or supervises team members who perform the following functions:

  • Create and deliver professional development workshops and on-demand training.
  • Conduct one-on-one faculty consultations, focused especially on opportunities for innovation.
  • Provide technical expertise to help answer complex support requests received by Virginia Tech’s help desk.
  • Contribute to documentation in Virginia Tech’s knowledge base (ServiceNow) and on the TLOS website.
  • Actively participate in TLOS’s faculty user communities, discussion groups, and peer support networks.
  • Analyze usage patterns and system logs to help TLOS leadership make data-informed decisions about its digital learning ecosystem.
  • Maintain relationships with vendors, developers, and external user communities.
  • Coordinate contract reviews and renewals with TLOS finance personnel and the university’s procurement team.

In addition, the Director of Learning Technologies Support has the following responsibilities as a leader and manager:

  • Supervise TLOS’s Learning Technologies Specialists, providing regular coaching and support to ensure that individual workloads are balanced and all contributors function effectively as a team.
  • Coordinate efforts with other leaders in TLOS by actively participating in committees and working groups and holding regular one-on-one conversations.
  • Establish and maintain productive working relationships with faculty leaders in programs and departments across campus.
  • Develop strategies for improving TLOS's user experience (UX) mindset, helping the entire organization understand and advocate for faculty and student needs.
  • Gather feedback from Virginia Tech faculty and students to better understand how our tools are being used.
  • Explore new commercial and open-source learning technologies, staying current with trends in the field and seeking out ways to implement or adapt emerging technologies for use at Virginia Tech.
  • Provide data-supported reports on the activity of the learning technologies team, in support of TLOS’s ongoing assessment efforts.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree, plus several years of relevant work experience in the field of educational technology.
  • Broad knowledge of technology-enhanced learning environments, tools, services, and pedagogies in use in higher education.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact professionally with clients and stakeholders.
  • Experience in technology-related customer support.
  • Excellent written communication, oral communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a diverse team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple and competing priorities in a dynamic environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree, preferably in a field related to information technology or education.
  • Demonstrated expertise in learning management systems, video capture and video conferencing tools, and other learning technologies.
  • Experience working with university faculty to develop educational materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and deliver effective workshops, consultation sessions, and other professional development resources for faculty.
  • Experience supervising other employees or leading collaborative working groups.

$75,000 - $85,000
