Description of Work Unit
The mission of Research Services within the Office of the Vice President of Research (OVPR) at Colorado State University (CSU) is to provide innovative services for the campus research community that will enable and assist their research, instruction, and diversity.
The OVPR Division includes ~300 employees reporting to 11 departments that support the research enterprise at the university.
Research Services is responsible for the design, implementation and user support of open source and custom software applications, and the configuration and administration of commercial SAAS (Software as a Service) tools to facilitate CSU’s research administration and operations. The team also develops and supports business intelligence reporting for these applications.
The department analyzes, designs, recommends, installs, configures, troubleshoots, maintains, administers, and supports the network and computers used by the OVPR Division. Responsibilities include collaboration with CSU’s Division of IT for university policy and procedures, communications with organizations representing international, federal, state, and local research sponsors as well as support of agreements with IT service vendors.

Position Summary
The Director of IT for Research Administration and Compliance at Colorado State University is a full-time, 12-month administrative professional appointment reporting to the OVPR’s Chief of Staff. This position oversees the technical operations and enterprise application development and support services, data & systems integration, data integrity, operational reporting support, identifying IT needs for the research administration and compliance mission of the university and ensuring technical issues relating to this mission are resolved effectively and efficiently.
For the Director of IT, we seek a highly skilled and motivated individual with:
  • Strong leadership skills to guide OVPR IT staff and systems to support the missions of the division and campus;
  • Strong collaboration and team-building skills to address IT challenges;
  • The ability to provide a vision for how OVPR IT should be positioned for the future; and
  • Technical skills necessary to lead OVPR IT staff, programs and systems while meeting IT goals and standards of the University.

  • The successful candidate will possess knowledge of current and pending practices and technologies in information systems, application development, application support, application maintenance, technology infrastructure, systems administration, data security, and business process analysis.
    This position is based in Fort Collins, with the potential for flexible work arrangements, including limited remote work.
    A signing bonus up to $7,000 may be considered for successful candidates.

    Required Job Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology or similar degree and 3 years experience OR any bachelor’s degree plus seven years of professional experience. Candidates with a High School Diploma (or GED) and 11 years related professional experience will be considered for employment (without the required bachelors or other post-secondary education).
    • Demonstrated increasing levels of managerial responsibilities.
    • Demonstrated leadership skills enabling a team to work effectively and efficiently to accomplish complicated projects.
    • Experience leading complex or multi-faceted technology operations towards achieving strategic goals and priorities
    • Knowledge of budget, finance and project management
    • Demonstrated experience managing vendor software agreements
    • Demonstrated experience in leading and managing software development
    Preferred Job Qualifications
    • Demonstrated knowledge of research administration systems and processes.
    • Experience in a Higher Education Research IT support environment
    • Working knowledge of an enterprise-wide administration or compliance application, such as the Kuali Research application and modules.
    • Advanced degree from an accredited college or university in Information Technology, Computer Information Systems, or a related field, or 10 years’ experience in information technology
    • Experience working with, or membership in, national research organizations such as the National Council of University Research Administrators, Society of Research Administrators International, or The Federal Demonstration Partnership

    • Oversee research-related administrative and compliance IT systems, operations, and infrastructure
    • Evaluate, develop, and implement campus-wide IT strategies in line with Office of Vice President for Research organizational objectives
    • Oversee and manage software development, deployment, and lifecycle maintenance, including infrastructure and campus-wide applications in collaboration with Division of IT
    • Coordinate with University’s IT security office to identify and mitigate security risks in compliance with university requirements and according to accepted IT industry best practices
    • Oversee OVPR IT Service Management (ITSM)
    • Oversee the implementation of operational reporting needs
    • Work to increase user satisfaction through ITIL practices
    • Evaluate IT operations regarding established goals
    • Prepare departmental budgets
    • Prepare Administrative IT Systems project progress and budget reports for OVPR Executive Committee and Financial Manager
    • Hire new members of IT staff, assuring resilience, IT experience and leadership skills of team members
    • Build and maintain relationships with outside vendors
