Position Summary
In support of the Associate Dean for Human Resources, the Director of Human Resources has primary operational oversight and responsibility for developing, implementing, and maintaining a full range of human resources programs, services, and business processes and procedures for the School of Medicine. This is a highly visible, management-level role, coordinating and facilitating human resources service delivery across the School of Medicine in coordination with various University central offices. In addition, this position will focus on leadership, strategic planning, change management, organizational development, and customer relationship management. The Director will assist leaders in resolving complex personnel issues and concerns and is also responsible for establishing a highly functioning communication structure that drives the partnership between the SOM Human Resources Office, its customers, and key stakeholders, including the University’s Office of Human Resources and UNC Health’s Human Resources Division.
The scope of the role includes planning, recruitment, compensation, classification, talent development, disciplinary actions, policy and procedure creation and interpretation, global talent recruitment, and ensuring adherence to University and State personnel guidelines and applicable laws and regulations. The SOM has over 10,000 employees, including tenured and non-tenured faculty, non-faculty professionals, staff, student employees, and post-doctoral scholars. In addition to this primary role, the position acts on behalf of the Associate Dean as assigned by the Associate Dean or in the absence of the Associate Dean as the principal human resources officer on campus- and SOM-level- decisions and committees. 
The Director will supervise staff members on the EHRA (Exempt from the Human Resources Act) Personnel Team, SHRA (Subject to the Human Resources Act) Personnel Team, and the Immigration/Credentialing Team. The position is also responsible for overseeing the SOM-HR Service Center, which provides coordinated full-service human resources-related support to all School of Medicine units, including 20 clinical and 7 basic sciences departments. In addition, this position will coordinate with the UNC Health Human Resources Division to execute human resources functions for UNC Health personnel assigned to support clinical departments within the School of Medicine.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent) with three years or greater of related professional experience; for candidates demonstrating comparable professional backgrounds, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and five years or greater of relevant experience in substitution.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
MANDATORY: Six years of commensurate experience in highly complex and decentralized human resources settings. Working knowledge of technology; effective organizational, interpersonal, leadership, and decision-making skills; and working collaboratively with others in a collegial environment are essential proven leader of HR professionals; strong supervisory experience a must.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
PREFERRED: Preferred qualifications include an advanced professional degree or SPHR Certification and significant human resources experience in higher education. Experience in an academic medical setting will be highly regarded. Direct experience with change management principles and best practices aligning with process improvement and Six Sigma orientation would be highly beneficial.

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
