The Department of Surgery at Duke University seeks a Director of Healthcare Analytics and Information Technology to work as the administrative partner with the Vice Chair of Innovation for the Department of Surgery spearheading projects related to the assessment, development, validation, and implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other innovations in healthcare.  The Director of Healthcare Analytics and IT is a multifaceted role that requires a balance of technical expertise, strategic and project planning, and vital leadership abilities, with a strong emphasis on integrating AI with healthcare innovations.  This role requires oversight of IT projects and initiatives intricately aligned with Duke Surgery's three core missions: education, research, and quality improvement through patient care and enhanced healthcare provider experiences.  Furthermore, the Director will play a significant role in the international expansion of the Surgical Artificial Intelligence and Innovation Laboratory (SAIIL) in conjunction with the educational administrative team within the department.  This role will be instrumental in the strategic development, execution, and global rollout of AI initiatives and data management within the Department of Surgery.

Overview of Key Responsibilities and Expectations :

Strategic Development and Stakeholder Management:

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for project-related communications of the Vice Chair of Innovation, including international partners involved in the SAIIL program, and ensure clear communication across all partners in the Program.
  • Coordinate and strategically develop AI initiatives, indicating a role combining operational and visionary leadership, while engaging diverse global stakeholders to secure project support and collaboration.
  • Engage with key stakeholders globally, including clinicians, data scientists, IT experts, and leadership, to ensure alignment, buy-in, and successful international collaboration.
  • Effectively communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, including international audiences, and translate AI concepts for a broad audience, ensuring clear understanding across cultural and language barriers.

Global Rollout and International Program Expansion of AI Initiatives:

  • A significant part of the role involves extending the reach of Duke's Science and AI in Learning and Living (SAIIL) program beyond local confines, necessitating a global vision and strategy for AI's role in healthcare.
  • The IT Administrator will play a key role in the global introduction and implementation of healthcare AI projects, which will require an understanding of international healthcare landscapes and regulatory environments.

Resource Management:

  • Guarantee that resource allocation aligns with Duke's missions and the SAIIL program’s international growth facets to ensure smooth execution and successful outcomes.
  • Oversee the allocation and management of resources, including personnel, technology, and budget, ensuring they contribute to the missions of education, research, and quality improvement, as well as the international expansion of SAIIL.
  • Identify project resources by strategically determining where and how the personnel, technological tools, and resources are best utilized to efficiently achieve project goals, both locally and internationally.  
  • Serve as administrative lead for the Laboratory for Transformative Administration and the Research Data Science Team and in this capacity assist with prioritization of projects and utilization of limited resources.

Project Portfolio Management:

  • Develop and manage a comprehensive project plan for AI integration in healthcare, ensuring alignment with Duke Surgery’s mission.
  • Oversee projects that are aimed at assessing, developing, validating, and implementing AI in healthcare settings.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams, including international partners, to ensure project milestones and deliverables are met through a comprehensive approach to project handling from inception to completion.
  • Monitor project progress and make strategic adjustments to foster successful outcomes and support global expansion, while monitoring expenditures to stay within timeline and budget.

Risk Management:

  • Identify and strategize against potential risks, particularly in international project expansion, that could impact projects or expansion efforts, and develop strategies to mitigate them.
  • Proactively address and resolve issues and challenges that arise during the project lifecycle, focusing on solutions that support and uphold global objectives.
  • Identify contingency plans and strategies to address potential circumstances that could adversely affect the project, assess their impact and implement a plan to respond effectively if they materialize.
  • Ensure all stakeholders are aware of the risks and the measures being taken to manage them and maintain risk management documentation for audit purposes and for improving risk management in future projects.

Quality Assurance and Data Management:

  • Ensure that the outputs of the AI integration project meet the highest quality standards, contributing positively to education, research, patient care, and international collaboration.
  • Develop and implement quality control processes to maintain the integrity of the global objectives of the project and others.
  • Develop technological quality controls to validate the outputs of the AI integration project and others using a combination of processes, tools, and methodologies aimed at ensuring the accuracy, reliability, and integrity of data, such as validation rules, error detection scripts and audit trails.
  • Ensure data privacy and security standards are followed using the appropriate data handling protocols, data access and documentation. 

Reporting and Documentation:

  • Prepare and present regular progress reports and updates to the Vice Chair of Innovation and other stakeholders, highlighting contributions to education, research, quality improvement, and the international expansion of SAIIL.
  • Document project proceedings meticulously for accountability and international reference by maintaining a comprehensive documentation inventory for future reference, audits, and as a resource for global partners. 

Reporting Lines:

Administrative report to Vice Chair of Administration and Finance.  Accountable to Vice Chair of Innovation.

  • Data Science Team

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration, Computer Science, Data Science, or related field. Master’s degree preferred.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in program or project management in healthcare or technology sectors.
  • Proven track record of managing large-scale, complex projects involving AI or advanced technologies, with a focus on education, research, quality improvement, and international expansion.
