The University of Washington is seeking an experienced professional to provide management and leadership for administrative and business service activities that help support UW’s six health sciences schools, as well as at the University level. The Director of Health Sciences Services reports to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and to the Chair of the Board of Health Sciences Deans (BoHSD). The Board of Health Sciences Deans includes the deans of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health, and Social Work.

The Director will help foster coordination across the health sciences schools. This includes maintaining regular communications with the HS deans; serving as a point of contact for the HS deans and other HS colleagues; and identifying and elevating opportunities and issues to the attention of the BoHSD for discussion and planning.

In addition, the Director is responsible for developing collaborative relationships with key University-wide units that are critical to the mission of the Health Sciences at UW: Facilities/Capital Projects, Office of Planning and Budgeting, UW Attorney General’s Office, Environmental Health & Safety and UW Police Department/Office of Student Life.

The Director will be responsible to the Chair of BoHSD for the oversight of Health Sciences facilities management, and certain business administration and service activities necessary to support the operations of the Health Sciences programs.

Duties & Responsibilities

Health Sciences Leadership – 90%

• Health Sciences Capital Projects: serve as the primary representative of the Health Sciences Deans on capital projects when they involve multiple health sciences schools. At the delegation of the BoHSD, serve as the chair or key participant on committees and teams throughout the capital project planning, design, and construction phases. This involves mutual representation of the deans’ priorities and goals to be incorporated into the planning, design, and construction work; and proactive assessment of issues and concerns that are brought to the attention of the deans, key stakeholders, and other members of leadership to identify solutions and facilitate resolutions.
• Health Sciences Academic Services & Facilities: leadership, planning, and oversight of this service unit that is responsible for providing facilities, classroom support, security, and building management that support health sciences programs and activities.
• Health Sciences Affiliation Agreements and Contracts: serve as the primary liaison, reviewer, and co-signatory on affiliation agreements and contracts for the five health sciences schools, not including the School of Medicine. This includes oversight and coordination across the five health sciences schools, and in collaboration with School of Medicine, to ensure information privacy and security requirements, accreditation requirements, alignment with the Health Sciences Immunization Program (HSIP), all current laws, policies, and regulations are consistent in term, practice, and application. The Director, in coordination and collaboration with the health sciences schools and University-wide units, is responsible for establishing a regular schedule to conduct a holistic review of agreement and contract templates, used by the five health sciences schools, to recommend changes and edits to ensure compliance and consistent best practices.
• Serve as the senior person responsible for administrative and staff support to the Board of Health Sciences Deans. This includes support to the Inter-Professional Education Initiative (IPE).
• Provide joint oversight and supervision of the Associate Vice President/Director for the Health Sciences/UW Medicine News & Community Relations with respect to that individual’s responsibilities for Health Sciences news and community relations.

Oversight and Management of HS-Related University-level Activities – 10%

• Assignment and re-assignment of space to programs across the Health Sciences programs.
• Ensure financial management and sustainability within the Health Sciences Services operating budget authority and other related resources, and within priorities established by the Provost based on a strategic planning process.

Requirements include:

• Master’s degree in business, health administration, capital planning, or a closely related field, or equivalent experience and a post-graduate degree.
• Minimum of 10 years of progressive responsibility and related experience that includes supervisory and management experience at a research institution of higher education or a large, complex organization.
• The successful candidate must demonstrate a high level of working knowledge of Health Sciences Schools’ teaching, research and program activities and be able to manage large, complex capital planning and other projects.
• Knowledge and experience in managing agreements and contracts.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
