Position Description

Summary 

Reporting to the Executive Director of the American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.), the Director of Finance is a key member of the senior leadership team and is responsible for the-day-to day management of the A.R.T. finances, which includes the development of the annual budget and multi-year plan, all accounting functions, reporting, procurement, payroll, fund-accounting, audits, and management of the finance team.

 

Core Duties


The Director will oversee and direct the finance team’s work related to forecasting, financial analysis, tracking and reporting, policies and procedures, financial transactions, multi-year fiscal planning, and annual external audit all in accordance with University policies and requirements of federal agencies. The   Director of Finance will work collaboratively with colleagues at the A.R.T. and Harvard.  The Director of Finance will serve as a strategic financial advisor to the A.R.T. senior leadership and Board of Trustees, ensuring alignment between artistic goals and financial priorities and will represent the A.R.T. on various committees.

  • Works under the guidance of the University’s Office of Finance and Administration in the Office of the President and Provost to develop and manage A.R.T. institutional budgets and to provide end-of-year reports and multi-year forecasts.
  • Manages Harvard University Budgeting System (HUBS) budgeting process, reporting, and forecasting and other financial systems.
  •  Utilizes Oracle financial systems, HUBS, Paychex, ad hoc querying tools, and other financial software to provide management with required reporting and analysis requests.
  • Supports and advises A.R.T. departments: Prepares and distributes budgets, supports adherence to budget targets, analyzes and resolves variances, provides revised forecasts for monthly, quarterly, and annual review.  
  • Reports financial results to A.R.T. Board of Trustees and presents at Finance  and Audit Committee meetings working in close collaboration with the chairs of these committees; attends Board of Trustees and Board of Advisors meetings.
  • Works with the University Office for Finance and Strategic Planning to develop and analyze multi-year and long-term operating models for the theater’s new home in Allston as well as for other facilities.
  • Develops financial models and relevant metrics, prepares ad hoc financial and statistical analysis, and leads multi- year financial planning.
  • Ensure financial compliance with University policies and procedures and applicable legal rules and regulations
  • Collaborates with University-wide finance leadership to improve processes and tools to maximize value and efficiency of financial planning and analysis efforts
  • Oversees the GL, A/R and A/P, cash management and procurement functions.
  • Responsible for effective staff management for a group or team of employees, including hiring and orientation, training and development, workflow and performance management, and the promotion of an inclusive and innovative work environment
  • Leads department goal setting, strategic planning, and process development
  • Manages ongoing relationships with external vendors and consultants, including facilitation of the annual audit

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required
  • Minimum of 8 years’ relevant work experience
  • Supervisory experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • MBA or Master’s degree in relevant field preferred
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, advanced Excel and PowerPoint skills
  • Advanced knowledge of budget management, financial analysis, financial modeling; working knowledge of accounting principles
  • Experience utilizing Harvard University’s financial systems:  HUBS, HCOM, and Oracle is a plus
  • Excellent oral and written communications, accounting, organizational, and analytical skills.
  • Collaborative working style and ability to build strong relationships with people at all  levels of the organization.
  • Previous experience working with an active, fiduciary board preferred.

PLEASE NOTE: This position may start hybrid (some on-campus/some remote work), with the transition to full-on campus in Cambridge if required by the department.  Work options for this role will be discussed during the interview process.
