Director of Fellows and Career Programs, Institute of Politics and Public Service - McCourt School of Public Policy

The Institute of Politics and Public Service (GU Politics) at Georgetown’s McCourt School of Public Policy is a non-academic program established to better connect students with the political process and empower them to make it work better.  Driven by a belief that better understanding can lead to more civil and productive politics, GU Politics offers a series of programs focused on practical and applied politics that offers students opportunities to directly engage with leading members of the political, governmental, journalism and advocacy communities; explore ideas to improve the process; and work to put some of those ideas into practice.

The Director of Fellows and Career Programs will oversee two of GU Politics’ flagship programs: the fellows program, and its career service programs.  His/her duties include but are not limited to:

Fellows Program:

  • Oversee selection process for each class of GU Politics Fellows (every semester).
  • Manage all programming aspects of each fellow’s tenure.
  • Coordinate fellows’ discussion groups and office hours.
  • Work with the Director of Events and Special Programs to facilitate events with fellows.
  • Select and manage student strategy teams for each fellow.
  • Work with the communications team to promote fellows activities on campus.

Career Program:

  • Implement a recurring mentorship program that connects students one-on-one with political practitioners
  • Plan and execute career chats with practitioners to shed light on career paths in public service
  • Organize visits and field trips to explore different industries
  • Facilitate internship and recruitment opportunities; eventually identifying opportunities to fund student stipends for internship work
  • Conduct skills-building workshops, trainings and clinics to provide students with tangible experience.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with alumni and professionals in government, campaigns, and the private and non-profit sectors to expand the GU Politics network of mentors and employers
  • Liaise with career-oriented offices and entities within Georgetown University and among its various schools and programs to identify partnership and collaboration opportunities
  • Expand the breadth and scope of career-focused programs and initiatives in new and innovative ways

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher.
  • Minimum of 2-4 years of experience in politics, government, advocacy, political campaigns, public relations, journalism or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of and passion for politics, government, public policy, media, advocacy, and current affairs is essential.
  • Strategic thinker with strong planning, management organizational skills
  • Strong skills in leadership, problem-solving, time management and communication
  • Strong interpersonal/relationship building skills
  • Willing and able to work evenings and weekends as necessary
  • Ability to build and foster positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Self-starter with ability to manage multiple projects and achieve goals
  • Enjoys working directly with students
  • Some professional experience in career development is helpful.
