Requirements

The Director of Faculty Affairs at Georgetown University in Qatar will be responsible for overseeing a wide range of faculty-related matters including, but not limited to, the following: faculty recruitment, appointment, reappointment, and promotion processes; faculty leaves; compliance with faculty-specific policies and procedures (e.g., missed class policy, course overload); research, exceptional grants, visitors, and all curricular and faculty events. Working closely with the Dean, Sr. Associate Dean, and the GU-Q Faculty Chair, the Director will also play a key role in facilitating faculty and student research. The position is term, for three years, renewable.

Key Accountabilities :

  • Oversee the processes for recruitment, appointment, reappointment, and promotion of full-time core and teaching faculty, and the recruitment and appointment of adjunct faculty.
  • Communicate and advise faculty on relevant university policies and procedures, and assist the Associate Dean in tracking compliance.
  • Oversee and coordinate a high volume of administrative processes, including those related to research leave, faculty merit, overload teaching, and course banking.
  • Facilitate faculty and student research, and oversee the research compliance function.

Key Activities :

  • In consultation with the Dean, Associate Dean, and Faculty Chair, coordinate full-time faculty searches and oversee recruitment processes.
  • Manage the appointment processes for visiting faculty, including from the main campus in Washington, DC.
  • Recruit and hire adjunct instructors, in consultation with the Dean, Associate Dean, Faculty Chair, and curricular field chairs.
  • Work with the Faculty Chair and curricular field chairs, and consult with the Dean, in managing the appointment of and providing support for visiting faculty, including from the main campus in Washington, DC.
  • Collaborate with other units to ensure the effective academic onboarding and orientation of new faculty.
  • In consultation with the Associate Dean and Faculty Chair, review faculty travel requests.
  • Oversee curricular activities fund and curricular group funding, ensuring usage of funds is in accordance with their respective policies.
  • Work with the Dean, Associate Dean, and Faculty Chair to ensure that all faculty meet workload standards.
  • Work with the Office of the Dean, Faculty Chair, and Provost Office to ensure the timely and efficient initiation and completion of reappointment and promotion processes.
  • Work with the Faculty Merit Committee to ensure timely reporting of annual faculty merit scores; work with HR to issue merit letters.
  • Facilitate faculty requests for research leaves and, in collaboration with the Associate Dean and Faculty Chair, make sabbatical recommendations to the Dean; oversee issuance of leave letters.
  • Review research proposals and outcome reports annually and make funding recommendations to the Dean.
  • In collaboration with relevant staff (e.g., Associate Director for Research Compliance, Assistant Director for Student Research, etc.), facilitate faculty and student research.
  • Oversee the function of research compliance to ensure appropriate tracking, reporting, and dissemination of faculty and student research outcomes.
  • Oversee all curricular and faculty events.
  • Lead and supervise a team of academic and administrative professional staff.
  • Contribute to the curriculum by teaching when possible or necessary.
  • Other similar duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree, preferably in the humanities or social sciences.
  • PhD preferred.
  • 8+ years of relevant work experience.
  • Record of excellence in teaching, research, and service or significant experience as a senior academic administrator.
  • Experience managing teams and working with university academic and administrative departments.
  • Experience developing and implementing academic policies and procedures.
  • Familiarity with the culture of academia and research institutions.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of faculty, staff, and other stakeholders across various cultural and institutional environments.
  • Outstanding communication skills, including editing and writing
  • Excellent organizational, administrative, and coordination skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Proficiency in MS Office.
