Founded in 1972, the O'Neill School was the first school to combine public management, policy, and administration with the environmental sciences. It remains the largest public policy and environmental studies school of its kind in the United States, with programs on both the IU, Indianapolis and IU Bloomington campuses.

Executive education for professionals and employers offers graduate level programs from the O'Neill School at IU, Indianapolis. Housed within one of the top-ranked public affairs schools in the country, the Executive Education Program offers for-credit and non-credit courses working with the public sector, nonprofit agencies, and the private sector to prepare leaders and managers to meet today's challenges and anticipate tomorrow's opportunities.  These programs help employees earn graduate certificates and even an executive MPA from Indiana University. Executive education also provides custom leadership and management programs for national and local clients in health care, social work, transportation, nonprofits, federal government, criminal justice, and public safety.

O'Neill Executive Education delivers a portfolio of non-credit programs in the areas of health administration, leadership, and human resources.  In addition, O'Neill Executive Education delivers a cohort-based executive Masters of Public Affairs (MPA) program that is nationally accredited by the Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs, and Administration and a graduate certificate in Public Management. 

O'Neill Executive Education draws on the O'Neill School's faculty resources in Bloomington and Indianapolis as well as our robust roster of associate faculty who have extensive experience across a variety of sectors. O'Neill Executive Education offers courses across locations in Indiana, the nation, and the globe. The program is housed at the Indianapolis location of the O'Neill School, positioning the new Director within the hub of public, non-profit, and industry opportunity while just blocks away from the State Capital.

The O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University invites applications for the position of Director of Executive Education. The Director of Executive Education is responsible for the operational direction and management of the Executive Education portfolio, and will collaborate with O'Neill  School leadership to engage in strategic planning to further strengthen existing executive programming while cultivating new programs, clients, and revenue streams.   

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with O'Neill School leadership on the strategic vision of O'Neill Executive Education. 
  • Collaborates with the O'Neill School Faculty MPA Director on for-credit academic curriculum and accreditation. 
  • Supports existing associate faculty members while recruiting new talent to deepen the pool of associate faculty.
  • Works collaboratively with the O'Neill School's faculty on both the Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses, as well as the faculty MPA Program Director of the Indianapolis campus.
  • Expands the portfolio of non-credit programs beyond our current offerings as well as develop new clientele seeking for-credit offerings.
  • Creates and launches new programs serving new clients. 
  • Directs all elements of the executive education organization including developing not-for-credit programs; partnering with faculty in the development and delivery of for-credit programs.
  • Hires associate faculty and schedules instructors. 
  • Prepares annual budgets. 
  • Manages executive education finances. 
  • Coordinates, plans, directs, and supervises the delivery of executive programs. 
  • Supervises administrative and support staff. 
  • Formulates and executes strategies to maintain existing program revenues and generate new revenue opportunities through the delivery of new programming and/or clients both domestically and internationally. 
  • Develops and delivers new open enrollment programs. Identify growth opportunities in the marketplace with existing and new clients both domestically and internationally.
  • Serves as a liaison between O'Neill Executive Education and relevant stakeholders across Indiana University, community, state, and international partners, and related industries.
  • Collaborates with O'Neill School faculty and the IU-Indianapolis Center for Teaching and Learning to develop best practices in pedagogy to enhance program delivery.
  • Effectively manages fiscal and human resources.
  • Manages executive education operations as well as business development of new and continued programming.
  • Manages continued professional development of executive education staff, including conducting formative and evaluative performance reviews consistent with the Performance at Indiana University system. 

General Responsibilities

  • Provides highest level of operational leadership and coordination of assigned staff members to define program methodologies and standards; provides direction and guidance on high priority program operations/projects/initiatives.
  • Establishes short-term business plans and long-term operational objectives, including managing program timelines/deliverables and developing resource plans for multi-project/multi-phase program initiatives.
  • Conducts a variety of personnel actions to include, but not limited to hiring, promotion, performance management, and dismissal.
  • Manages high level assignments and allocation of resources, including negotiating and coordinating initiatives that involve staff in other departments/areas/teams; may coordinate large-scale programs with a wide audiences in support of academic initiatives.
  • Makes budgetary recommendations/proposals based on resource needs and ensures cost containment.
  • Researches and stays up-to-date on new industry program standards, subject matter experts, best practices, and strategic marketing; responsible for the implementation of new protocols/procedures to address business needs.
  • Works collaboratively with other unit leaders, volunteers, students and/or faculty experts across departments in recommending standards, best practices, and related policies/procedures.
  • Prepares management reports and summaries for senior administration, executive, steering and advisory committees; acts as advisor to executive committees; serves on various university committees, communities of practice, and task forces related to program development, educational initiatives and institutional priorities.

EDUCATION

Required

  • Bachelor's degree In related field. 

Preferred

  • Master's Degree or terminal degree in higher education (J.D., Ph.D., Ed.D). in related field. 

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 4 years of relevant experience. 
  • 1 year of management experience. 

Preferred

  • Experience cultivating business development in the public, non-profit, and/or private sectors. 
  • Experience managing fiscal and human resources. 
  • Management experience, preferably in complex organizations and in executive programs. 
  • Experience developing and delivering executive education, training, or continuing education. 
  • Experience developing business partnerships with organizations across public, non-profit, and private sectors. 
  • Experience managing external relationships with sponsoring associations, client organizations, and alumni. 
  • Experience of dealing with the most senior executives within the organization.

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus.
