The Office of Advancement helps Belmont University achieve its mission by building a stronger community of support for the entire campus amongst all its constituencies.  In collaboration with university partners, Advancement is leading the effort to prepare for the most ambitious fundraising campaign in the university’s history.  Building on a track record of success, Belmont University is undergoing a period of growth and is actively increasing its institutional advancement capacity and capabilities so it can realize its full potential as a Christ-centered university in the thriving city of Nashville, TN.

About the College

The Healthcare Education and Sciences at Belmont University is comprised of the Thomas F. Frist College of Medicine, The Gordon Inman College of Nursing, The College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and the College of Sciences and Mathematics. The candidate will report to the Associate Vice-President of Development, Healthcare Education and Sciences.

The Director of Development serves as a key member of the fundraising team with the primary focus on a portfolio of assigned prospects to raise major gifts of $100,000 and higher. Using best practices and supported by a research and analytics-driven advancement services team, this position will help expand the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major donors to fund college priorities and designated projects, major and planned gifts for Belmont University. The Director of Development will cultivate philanthropic support for Belmont University independently and in partnership with academic deans and other university partners.

The responsibilities of the Director of Development, Healthcare Education and Sciences, include:

  • Responsible for soliciting gifts from prospects capable of supporting Belmont University with gifts of $100,000 and higher.
  • Develop and manage a portfolio of relationships. Cultivate, sustain, and grow relationships with the university’s strategically important alumni, parents, and friends. Coordinate and implement activities designed to increase prospect, alumni and donor engagement and secure philanthropic gifts in support of the university.
  • Articulate the goals and priorities of the campus through excellent informal and formal communications. Write donor correspondence, contact reports and proposals, and provide updates and briefings on program status.
  • Keep current on programs and initiatives that meet the university’s strategic objectives.
  • Works closely with the Associate Vice President, Healthcare Education and Sciences and the major gifts team to maintain a successful major donor management system and active prospect review process. This includes regular activity reporting, recording relationship tracking information and analyzing cultivation and solicitation results. Perform within specific activity goals including number of proposals delivered, meeting expectations.
  • Prepare an annual portfolio plan in consultation with the Associate Vice President, Healthcare Education and Sciences.
  • Contribute to a dynamic, creative and energetic team environment. Ability to work in a complex environment and be a team player.
  • High level of focus and goal-orientation.
  • Actively manage a portfolio of 100+ assigned prospects; devising, and implementing individual cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies. Solicit outright and multi-year campaign commitments while achieving annual gift income goals based on an assigned prospect pool.
  • Frequent travel to meet with prospects and represent the university at regional events. Understanding and articulating the university’s campaign fundraising priorities and gift opportunities.
  • Develop and coordinate proposals for major gifts individually and in collaboration with other development officers, planned giving colleagues, other members of the Advancement team and the campus community contributing to the University's overall success.
  • Use metrics to advise actions and strategies, maximizing fundraising effectiveness.
  • Experience with a CRM system and skilled use of Microsoft Office software, including Excel, as well as presentation, and website applications expected.

  • Three to five years of major gift fundraising experience with documented success in cultivating and soliciting major gifts of $100,000 and above from individual prospects, preferably in a medical setting.
  • Prior experience in a college, university or medical setting, enthusiasm for fundraising and the desire to work collegially within a goal-oriented fundraising organization.
  • Knowledge of fundraising principles, methods, and standards.
  • Expertise in developing solicitation strategies.
  • The ability to work strategically, develop and implement constituency programs and activities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and as a team player.
  • Competency in problem-solving.
  • Must be an outstanding communicator and possess excellent written and verbal communication skills; interpersonal skills; and the ability to work collegially and interact effectively with a diverse constituency.
  • An appreciation for and support of diversity in the workplace in all its forms; proven success working with stakeholders; project management skills; experience in a data-driven environment; organizational skills; and the ability to lead, influence and motivate others are required.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment and the ability to respond to high-pressure situations. Ability to thrive in an environment of hard work.

Required Education Qualified applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Master’s degree preferred.
  
Required Experience At least three years of professional experience in development, preferably in major gifts fundraising and in higher education.
