Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit | University Development’s purpose is to support the mission of the university by raising private resources to enhance financial support for students, faculty, programs, and facilities. University Development provides leadership and centralized services to all development offices throughout the University, serving as a focal point for annual giving, application development and IT support; campaign management; constituent programs; corporate and foundation relations; donor relations; gift planning; gift services; industry relations; marketing/communications; parents giving; principal gifts; prospect management, research and analytics; regional programs; scholarships and student aid; talent management; university events; and volunteer engagement. Position Summary | This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station in Chapel Hill, NC. The Director of Development for Principal Gifts oversees the production of essential Principal Gifts (PG) team deliverables including, but not limited to, Chancellor-level donor meeting briefings and gift acknowledgements, PG gift proposals, and other development-related correspondence such as donor meeting/event follow-up. This includes writing and editing content and collaborating with UDO Marketing & Communications. The Director is responsible for supporting the engagement, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, as well as identification of new principal gift prospects (PGPs) and emerging wealth prospects (EWPs). The Director works in partnership with the PG team and campus development colleagues to create and execute cultivation/engagement strategies that advance each prospect’s meaningful connection to the university and sets the stage for solicitation in accordance with the university’s priorities. Specific responsibilities include managing all aspects of the Chancellor’s Regents Society, serving as team lead for PG football and men’s basketball strategy, and developing additional programs for cultivation/engagement that align with Carolina’s fundraising priorities. Additionally, the Director will serve as PG liaison to assigned schools/units and over time build a personal portfolio of 10-20 PGPs and/or EWPs The Director of Principal Gifts reports to the Executive Director of Principal Gifts and supervises a full-time Development Manager. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements | Minimum of a bachelor’s degree required (or foreign degree equivalent) with related experience. For positions with responsibility for direct solicitation of gifts and funds, a minimum of 1 year of professional-level, direct solicitation/fundraising experience is required. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | The Director of Development for Principal Gifts will be a seasoned and polished professional who knows and understands the nature and purpose of higher education. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills required. Demonstrated ability to interact effectively and collaboratively in a comprehensive, research university setting with a proven record of accomplishments. An ability to work effectively with volunteer leaders. A stable employment history with increasing levels of responsibility at each career juncture. The drive to be successful. Integrity, sincerity, and exceptional organization skills. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | Five to seven years of progressive fundraising and/or communications experience. |
