DIRECTOR OF COUNSELING AND PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES

The Position Under the general direction of the Associate Vice President for Student Life – Equity Programs, the Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) Director provides administrative and professional leadership for the department of CAPS. Additionally, the CAPS Director serves as a CAPS clinician and the supervisor to the Sexual Assault Victim Advocate. The director's administrative responsibilities include ensuring the delivery of high-quality CAPS and sexual assault advocacy services, development of strategic goals and objectives for the department, establishing needed CAPS policies, procedures, and protocols, and evaluating outcomes. The director oversees the daily operation of CAPS which includes CAPS clinicians' schedules, reception and intake process, mental health triaging, response to crises and other special situations, and coordinating and planning group activities, outreach, training, prevention, and educational workshops. The director leads CAPS meetings and case conferences; selects, trains, supervises, and evaluates CAPS faculty; and shares supervision of the CAPS station reception staff. The director provides direct clinical care to individuals and groups, gives expert opinion, responses to crisis and urgent situations, and provides consultation to staff and faculty in managing student concerns. The director also oversees the CAPS training coordinator and graduate internship program. The director collaborates with the SHC psychiatrists, medical providers, and other SHC staff; participates in the SHC Continuous Quality Improvement program; represents CAPS within the SHC and outside including the University, professional organizations, and the public. The director serves on the university CARE Team, Community Care Council and other committees as assigned. The director will be on-call after hours and on weekends in case of emergencies and for crisis intervention.
