Director of Communications, Environment and Sustainability Institute – Georgetown University

The Georgetown Environment Initiative (GEI) is a University-wide effort to advance the multidisciplinary study of the environment and sustainability in relation to society, scientific understanding, sound policy, and the complex challenges we face as stewards of the Earth.

The Director of Communications has four main duties: 1) Overseeing the production of all of the Georgetown Environment Initiative’s (GEI) communications and publications in print, online and in other media—including the GEI website, social media channels, and Common Home magazine—as well as representing GEI interests to media, community partners, and the University; 2) Supporting special projects stemming from the work of the Director and managing his executive communications (remarks, presentations, quotes, etc.); 3) Providing strategic direction and planning for communications-related matters as the Initiative grows; and 4) Producing a limited number of events dedicated to promoting the work of GEI and the University’s advancements on environmental issues.

Reporting to the Director, and supervising a full-time content manager, as well as a team of student intern employees and contributing authors, the Director of Communications engages internal and external stakeholders, the general public, and the media. Duty specifics include but are not limited to:

Content Production and Management

  • Oversee the strategy and execution of GEI communications
  • Oversee production of multimedia content for GEI’s Common Home Magazine (print) and use of content in other media (web, email, e-newsletters, etc.)
  • Lead the media, external relations, and PR strategy and execution
  • Manage the writing and distribution of press releases and coordinate media interviews and track appearances and mentions
  • Coordinate with external media to maximize GEI exposure

Director Support

  • Draft, pitch, and place Op-Eds on behalf of Executive Director
  • Develop language and assets for special projects stemming from the work of the director
  • Manage executive communication on behalf of the Director, including remarks for public appearances and quotes for web stories, interviews, and press releases
  • Assist with donor meetings and fundraising events as needed

Strategy and Planning

  • Create and implement annual communications plan and strategy
  • Give communications-related input to strategic planning
  • Support the development of partnerships between GEI and external partners

Events Management

Oversee the creation and implementation of limited annual signature events GEI, such as talks, screenings, art openings, networking events, etc.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, digital media, journalism, or liberal arts
  • At least 5 years of experience demonstrating progressively greater responsibility in communications, marketing, and/or digital media
  • Strong writing and editing skills and experience in conceiving and drafting communications strategies
  • Demonstrable ability to craft a communications strategy and successfully implement it for a large organization required
  • Experience with media relations, including promotional strategy, writing press releases, and coordinating with press for both interviews and events
  • Demonstrated practical experience managing complex websites and content production
  • Experience with both social media strategy and campaign execution
  • Advanced knowledge of all Microsoft Office Products and Google apps
  • Familiarity with CRM, Adobe Creative Suite, and multimedia editing software

Preferred qualification

Experience working in a large-scale academic operation
