Job Description Summary

The Director of Clinical Skills Position is responsible for the clinical and simulation curriculum to include assessment, content, and delivery.


Qualifications

Required Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in applicable field.

Required Experience:

  • 10 years of related clinical and teaching experience.

Preferred Education:

  • MD/DO licensed or eligible to practice medicine in Texas

Preferred Experience:

  • Undergraduate medical education teaching experience

  • Experience working with diverse individuals and communities

Preferred Licenses and Certifications:

  • MD, DO licensed or eligible to practice medicine in Texas.

Required Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Able to use variety of health-related computer programs and electronic health records.

  • Ability to provide clinical training skills to multi-level learners.

  • Ability to assess clinical learners.

  • Ability to help create and implement clinical skills curriculum

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

  • Experience working with diverse individuals and communities.

Preferred Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of clinical curriculum development

  • Provide workshops and hands-on clinical training to students and faculty


Job Responsibilities

Clinical Skills

-Develop, implement, evaluate, and improve methods to teach and assess clinical skills using simulation.

-Develop and implement assessments to ensure clinical competence in history-taking, interviewing, physical exam skills, clinical reasoning, documentation, and performing procedures.

-Demonstrate familiarity with and prepare students for standardized clinical assessments in conjunction with faculty, such as Objective Structured Clinical Exams (OSCE).

-Provide instructional workshops or appropriate sessions with faculty who conduct clinical skills instruction and assessment. In collaboration with Clinical Learning Resource Center (CLRC), provide faculty development opportunities related to clinical simulation.

-Assist with efforts to centralize clinical skills testing and simulation data collection and interpretation including failures, partial failures, feedback and remediation

-Verify that returning MD/PhD and Leave of Absence students are up-to-date on clinical skills

Curriculum

-Coordinate, in collaboration with CLRC, simulation curriculum across four-year medical education, including pre- clerkship and clerkship curriculum.

-Participate in development and teaching of Practice of Medicine courses across four-year curriculum.

-Plan and evaluate, in collaboration with Executive Clerkship and Clerkship Directors, OSCEs for each clerkship across all campuses.

-Review College of Medicine simulation cases to ensure alignment with curricular goals and support clinical faculty in the creation of new case materials.

-Provide consultation for educators seeking to utilize simulation to enhance curricular goals.

-Collaborate with appropriate faculty/staff to develop and coordinate interprofessional and interdisciplinary clinical simulation activities.

-Collaborate with the CLRC to earn and maintain Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH)Accreditation of Healthcare Simulation Programs; ensure best practices in simulation.

Remediation and Re-Entry

-Collaborate with Academic Affairs, course/clerkship directors, and CLRC to plan and implement remediation for students who fail to perform at expected level in clerkships and/or on assessments of clinical skills.

-Participate in assessing re-entry students for competency in performing clinical skills needed to safely reenter.
