Description – Assistant Director of Campus Recreation

Campus Recreation is looking for an experienced and dynamic person to join our team. Penn State Campus Recreation is committed to, and accountable for, advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in all its forms. We embrace individual uniqueness, foster a culture of inclusive excellence that supports both broad and specific diversity initiatives, leverage the educational and institutional benefits of diversity, and engage all individuals to help them thrive.  Under the general supervision of the Associate Director of Campus Recreation, the Assistant Director has significant responsibilities for the presentation and representation of Campus Recreation facilities, programs, and services including: IM Building, McCoy Natatorium, Stone Valley Outdoor Recreation Area, Tennis Center, White Building, Hepper Fitness Center, Outdoor Adventures, Aquatics, Club Sports, Fitness and Wellness Programs, and Intramural Sports. Campus Recreation is comprised of 53 full-time staff and more than 900 student staff members.  

Areas of responsibility include but are not limited to:

  • Create uniformity in facility-based instructional and policy signage to create a consistent language, look and feel across all Campus Recreation facilities
  • Work with Campus Recreation facilities, programs and services staff regarding projects to engage participation and their implementation
  • Development, management and oversight of a $180,000 Member Communication and Outreach budget
  • Recruitment, hiring, training, and supervision of staff
  • Benchmarking like schools to determine best practices

Typically requires a bachelor’s degree and 4+ years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience, preferably in a recreation or health setting. Knowledge of basic design, social media, web-based applications or branding system applications. This position requires independent work on complex assignments while reviewing progress and updating the Associate Director as appropriate. Knowledge of student development principles and ability to provide leadership and development opportunities for student employees is critical. Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication (oral and written) skills are essential. Must be able to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines and hold staff accountable. Attention to detail and good judgment are vital requirements. The successful candidate will have the willingness to lead and work in a team-based environment.

As a member of the Campus Recreation management team, the Assistant Director must have an understanding of departmental goals, vision and direction and be able to communicate this information with Coordinator and student staff. The ability to foster a positive climate among a diverse group of staff, student employees and participants is essential. The successful candidate will have the willingness to lead and work in a team-based environment as well as an eagerness to support and engage with all departmental initiatives and efforts as well as within the Division of Student Affairs.

CAMPUS SECURITY CRIME STATISTICS:

Pursuant to the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act and the Pennsylvania Act of 1988, Penn State publishes a combined Annual Security and Annual Fire Safety Report (ASR). The ASR includes crime statistics and institutional policies concerning campus security, such as those concerning alcohol and drug use, crime prevention, the reporting of crimes, sexual assault, and other matters. The ASR is available for review here .
