Director of Athletic Communications

Job Summary

The Director of Athletic Communications oversees all aspects of athletic media relations,

including production of UVA Wise Athletics publications, statistics, community public relations, broadcasting, graphic/website design, content creation, event management, preparing news releases, marketing engagement, assisting with the management of interns and other student employees; and performing other related duties as assigned. This position reports to the Director of Athletics and serves as a member of the Athletic Department’s Leadership Team.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan and manage gameday operations for home contests (statistics, broadcasting, media relations, opponent relations)
  • Write content for the UVA Wise official athletics website, uvawisecavs.com
  • Compile and archive statistics
  • Arrange all interviews with student-athletes and coaches
  • Manage all broadcasts through the Cavalier Sports Network
  • Write press releases and feature stories
  • Maintain historical records
  • Strategically direct the athletics department’s media relations, communications, and promotions.
  • Develop, create and distribute creative content
  • Oversee all social media communication strategies through creation and implementation across all platforms
  • Initiate and coordinate television, radio, digital, and print media for important events and announcements
  • Work directly and collaboratively with the UVA Wise Office of Marketing and Communications
  • Manage and recruit full-time and part-time communications staff, including student employees
  • Serves as a liaison to the South Atlantic Conference Office where appropriate

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • 1 year of experience working in Athletic Communications/Sports Information

Preferred Qualification

  • Master’s degree
  • 3 years of experience working in Athletic Communications/Sports Information

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of in-game statistical programs (StatCrew, NCAA Live Stats, Genius). Desktop media and other software programs (Adobe Creative Software). Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Strong customer service skills and teamwork aptitude. Ability to prioritize multiple tasks. Experience working with outside media outlets. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
