Position Summary
The Director of Advancement, School of Law in University Advancement reports to the Senior Director of Advancement, School of Law in department and works closely with the Associate Vice Chancellor of the department in the Office of Major Gifts and Capital Projects. This position has significant managerial responsibilities. This is a key position that will require contact with the executive vice chancellor for the department, the chancellor, and other senior university officials. Additionally, the director will work closely with high-level volunteers and donors.
The purpose of the Department of Law Advancement is to secure financial resources required to achieve its mission and strategic plan. The department is responsible for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individuals and organizations whose charitable objectives are consistent with the School’s objectives in terms of its mission, teaching, research, clinical, and community service programs. Establishing and nurturing meaningful interactions with current and future alumni by providing strategies and opportunities for engagement and education is a core responsibility of the department. Job Description

This position requires the ability to travel up to 25%.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage a portfolio of major gift prospects and donors in St. Louis and other assigned major markets; meet goals for meaningful contacts, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and closed gift goals. Donor development will be largely in person, supplemented by a variety of virtual technologies.
  • Develop thoughtful, creative and prudent strategies for meeting fundraising goals, and in partnership with the Senior Director, develop and implement sound strategies for the department to cultivate, solicit and steward new and existing major gift prospects.
  • Serve as a law school resource, expert and collaborator to UA colleagues, with a focus on enabling their success with closing gifts for the School of Law. 
  • Work closely with a variety of Advancement colleagues, their school director, the Law Dean and faculty as appropriate to maximize success and advance major gift fundraising outcomes for the School of Law.
  • Effectively market WashULaw to major gift prospects, and internal key stakeholders to maximize near and long term impact related to major gift prospects, donors and successful solicitations.
  • Responsibility for the strategic planning, execution and evaluation of local, regional, and national donor and event strategies and select Dean Initiatives as assigned, in partnership with Senior Associate Director of Alumni Relations.
  • Assist Senior Director with strategic analysis, nuanced and high visibility projects, communications, and planning as needed, to include annual goal setting, fundraising and campaign planning.
  • Under the supervision of the Senior Director of Advancement, mentor fundraisers to maximize individual and team fundraising success and the professional development of the Law Advancement fundraising team.
  • Effectively manage direct reports using documented quantitative metrics, and qualitative metrics as agreed upon by school director. Undertake other special assignments as requested.  
  • In partnership with department leader, develop, implement and manage major gift fundraising strategy for the department, collaborating with University Advancement colleagues including Business Intelligence, Annual Giving Programs and the Regional Advancement team, as well as key stakeholders in the School of Law and across campus.
  • Establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with the internal constituents across the Law Advancement team, University Advancement and across the School of Law, with the highest degrees of professionalism.
  • Serve as a WashULaw Ambassador internally and externally.
  • Develop a broad comprehension of the history, mission, strategic plan, faculty, degree programs, and curriculum of the School of Law in order to benefit the School of Law by expanding knowledge and strategic relationships.
  • Deliver the highest levels of customer service to donors and internal and external key stakeholders.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree, along with a detailed working knowledge of higher education or fundraising.
  • Five to seven years of experience with fund-raising, external constituency relationships, or a record of demonstrated achievement in a field requiring the application of similar skills. 
  • Direct fundraising experience is strongly preferred with proven leadership skills and experience effectively representing their organization to an external, sophisticated constituency. Success soliciting gifts of $50,000 or more is strongly preferred.
  • Superior organizational skills, poise, exemplary oral and written communication skills, and the ability to thrive in a highly nuanced and rigorous, professional environment.
  • The demonstrated ability to effectively articulate the needs, interests and accomplishments of the School of Law to a wide range of audiences, and nurture and create relationships. 
  • Capacity to perform in an intellectually rigorous and complex environment, exhibit personal characteristics enabling effective interaction with important, well-informed constituencies, and a genuine commitment to the advancement of law and legal education and to the principles of Washington University.
  • Leadership, intellectual curiosity, exceptional judgement, discretion and collaborative and strategic thinking skills are crucial, as is a drive to continuously seek and implement constructive feedback in order to deliver results at the highest levels, meeting needs of key stakeholders.

Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of five years of related experience.

Salary Range
$70,300.00 - $120,000.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
