Job Summary / Basic Function
Under direction of the Executive Director of Academic and Student Success, the Director of Academic Support is a full-time, professional position responsible for overseeing the tutoring, supplemental instruction, and testing services for PennWest. This position works closely with faculty, administrators, and staff to promote and provide for the academic support needs of students.
Essential Duties:
  • Provides direct supervision of the tutoring and supplemental instruction programs and testing centers at each PennWest site.
  • Collaborates with Tutoring, Supplemental Instruction, and Testing Coordinators to establish a common and consistent set of goals and practices for tutoring/supplemental instruction and testing at each PennWest site.
  • Holds regular meetings with staff to ensure all sites are running effectively; completes annual performance evaluations for direct reports.
  • Provides training and regular professional development for staff.
  • Utilizes Starfish to track tutoring appointments and interactions for data collection.
  • Collects, analyzes, and interprets data regarding utilization of tutoring and supplemental instruction to demonstrate the effectiveness of services.
  • Prepares monthly and annual reports and makes recommendations concerning programming changes/adjustments/improvements.
  • Responsible for creating and implementing strategies to measure and assess the adequacy of and the return on the investment in the tutoring resources.
  • Facilitates meetings with campus departments, deans, faculty, and staff to ensure tutoring and testing services are meeting the needs of students.
  • Prepares informational materials and employs marketing strategies to promote tutoring and testing services among students, faculty, and staff.
  • Ensures peer tutoring schedules across all three sites meet the diverse needs of our student population.
  • Monitors the use of the online tutoring platform and communicates renewal needs for continued funding.
  • Engages in professional development activities to maintain knowledge and awareness of effective tutoring and testing practices, and to maintain certification statuses.
  • Prepares and oversees the tutoring, supplemental instruction, and testing center budgets.
  • Collaborates with supervisor to ensure all staffing needs are met across all sites.
  • Work with students, departments, faculty and staff in the support of veteran, military and international students.
  • Serves as the Student Concierge on the Clarion campus.
  • Travel to California, and Edinboro sites as needed.
  • Obtains/maintains certifications across the tutoring and testing centers:
  • Tutoring: CRLA (College Reading & Learning Association) NCLCA (National College Learning Center Association)
  • Testing: CollegeBoard, ETS, Pearson, and ATI delivered exams
  • Required Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
    Minimum of Education / TrainingRequired Education Summary
    • Bachelor’s degree required and a minimum of 3 years working experience in higher education.
    • Experience working with Starfish student success platform in the scheduling of tutoring.
    • Experience with identifying and hiring peer tutors.
    • Experience working with international and military-affiliated students.
    Preferred Qualifications
    • Master’s degree and a minimum of 5 years’ experience in higher education working in tutoring and/or testing.
