JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Director of Academic Success provides daily direction and manages the overall retention and academic support service operations for the undergraduate medical education program and the Physician Assistant (PA) Program in the College of Medicine. This position oversees the development and implementation of resources, services, and programs to positively impact the retention and on-time graduation of students by maximizing the learning and adjustment of students to the demands of the College of Medicine.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Benchmarks and assesses program goals and outcomes in alignment with best practices in medical schools and Physician Assistant Programs that impact retention and success.
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with faculty and staff within the college and across UTHSC to identify needs and appropriate services for students.
  • Leads outreach and retention services and programs targeting under-represented and at-risk students.
  • Collaborates with campus pathway programs to provide coaching, programming and support to medical students and PA students participating in the program.
  • Partners with students, including at-risk students, to develop individualized academic plans for continual progression in programs.
  • Supports students for a variety of issues related to academic success including but not limited to the development of learning and study skills, self and time management, test-taking strategies, integration of learning resources, metacognition, strategies for Step 1, Shelf, and Step 2 readiness (National Medical Exam Preparation), self-reflection, and maintaining an appropriate balance between life and school to promote positive academic results.
  • Develops targeted programs for under-represented students; collaborates with SASSI Learning Specialist, Counselors, and Care Navigators to bridge academic and mental health resources for students.
  • Collaborates in the development of assessments, program evaluations, and surveys to assess student needs.
  • Serves as liaison with other departments across campus; works collegially with other University faculty, staff, and student groups to develop and provide an optimal level of services to College of Medicine students.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

     

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  

    EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree in Educational Psychology, Counseling, Adult Education, or a related field.  (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

    EXPERIENCE: Seven (7) years of experience developing medical school support programming, USMLE preparation, and learning strategies; OR a Master’s Degree and five (5) years of experience developing medical school support programming, USMLE preparation, and learning strategies. 

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

    ·         Ability to be versatile, flexible, and attuned to the changing needs of a diverse student environment.

    ·         Ability to connect and establish relationships with students from different backgrounds and with varied academic experiences.

    ·         Strong written and oral presentation skills.

    ·         Knowledge of learning theory and its application in a health science environment.

    ·         Skills in the area of data collection, analysis, assessment, and identifying opportunities for the use of data.

    ·         Ability to develop interactive and engaging presentations and educational materials and resources.

    ·         Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.

    ·         Knowledge of successful board/licensure preparation strategies and programs.

    ·         Strong coaching skills and knowledge of best practices in coaching.

    ·         Ability to establish strong relationships with faculty and staff across campus.

    WORK SCHEDULE:  This position may occasionally be required to work weekends and evenings. This position may require overnight travel.
