Position Overview
The Director would serve as a coach and mentor to O’Brien fellows, providing advice on tackling major investigative and public service projects, including working with editors from the fellows’ home organizations. In addition, the Director would serve as the program’s public face, host the O’Brien conferences, engage in public outreach and recruiting of O’Brien fellows, manage the budget, and work with and mentor the O’Brien program’s student employees. The director is also expected to teach journalism courses and to fulfill other service duties associated with the position.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Supervising O’Brien fellows and O’Brien interns in reporting and placing their projects for publication
2. Creating and carrying out promotional partnerships with journalism organizations related to recruiting O’Brien applications
3. As a member of the Journalism and Media Studies department, prepare and teach undergraduate journalism courses as needed
4. Supervise and train graduate assistants assisting with promotion, recruiting and administrative tasks
5. Oversee fellow selection and student intern selection processes
6. Manage administrative and financial tasks including budget, vendor payments and expenses in conjunction with the Director of Academic Business Affairs
7. Serve as the public face of the program at conferences, events, and promotional appearances
8. Carry out tasks assigned as a member of the Journalism and Media Studies department.
9. Performs all other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Bachelor’s degree required.
At least 10 years of journalism experience including work on in-depth stories and projects.
Facility with investigative techniques.
Understanding of journalism industry trends.
Willingness to create partnerships with news outlets and journalism industry groups.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
M.A. or advanced degree preferred.
Supervisory/leadership experience.
History of work guiding students or young professionals.
Willingness and ability to teach journalism courses including investigative journalism; comfort handling administrative tasks.
