Job Description Summary:
The George Washington University is seeking a bold, intersectional, and student-centered leader to serve as Director of the Multicultural Student Services Center (MSSC) within the Office for Diversity, Equity and Community Engagement (ODECE). Reporting to the Associate Vice Provost for Diversity, Equity and Community Engagement at GW, the Director of the MSSC provides strategic leadership that promotes the most inclusive, equitable, and justice-centered community. The Director opportunity is designed for someone who is passionate about diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, antiracism, and decolonization. It is important that the individual in this role is grounded in critical theory – including and not limited to, Critical Race Theory, Critical Indigenous Theory, Black Feminist Theory, Critical Queer Theory – and leads from an intersectional framework. This role has the potential to lay a strong foundation for identity-based work at GW, and advocate for ongoing resources to support students, particularly those with historically marginalized and excluded identities in higher education.
The Director will be responsible for establishing a clear mission, vision, goals, and programming structure for the center. At the core, the function of the center is to provide a space for support, advocacy, education, development, and community for all students. The center serves as a central place at GW that is committed to affirming, challenging, and supporting students from historically marginalized and excluded identities. Additionally, the center has a responsibility to educate and develop individuals who hold privileged identities and create opportunities for individual and collective developmental work.
The Director will focus on developing a plan and vision for outlining the center’s priorities, grounded in five major areas:

  • Development
  • Community Building
  • Environment Enhancement

The two core student identity areas of the center are gender and sexuality and race, and ethnicity
The incoming Director will have the opportunity to hire an Assistant Director upon starting. In addition to the Assistant Director role, there are three Graduate Assistants, undergraduate student staff, and the opportunity to propose new roles after reviewing the needs of the center.
Essential Functions:
Collaborative Leadership:
  • Proactively works with campus partners to assess community needs and designs, implements, and assesses the effectiveness of student support, affinity-based programming, and cultural competence educational programs and learning opportunities.
  • Develops strategies to enhance student learning and promote the University’s goals for inclusive excellence.
  • Cultivates, administers, and manages a comprehensive intercultural/multicultural affairs program serving the GW community.
  • Provides thoughtful pathways for communities to engage across differences to address longstanding, sometimes historically rooted, conflict.
  • Establishes a culture of assessment, including an annual report capturing the framework, programming, and learning fostered by the center.
  • Serves on university-wide committees, participates in New Student Orientation, and has a presence at various university events hosted by Athletes, Alumni Relations, and Student Affairs.
  • Advises the Vice Provost and Associate Vice Provost for Diversity, Equity, and Community Engagement in areas of strategic planning, policy development, budgeting, reporting, and programming to build and promote a more interculturally aware and inclusive campus.

Student Engagement:
  • Collaborates with multiple University constituencies to develop, supervise, and assess programs and initiatives designed to enhance the experience of students from historically marginalized and excluded groups.
  • Works collaboratively with staff across ODECE and in the Division of Student Affairs, the University Registrar, Institutional Research, Enrollment & Student Success, Athletics, and the Office of Financial Aid and Campus Life in order to increase student retention.
  • Serves as primary contact for Undergraduate/Graduate Admissions recruitment events with an emphasis on historically marginalized and excluded groups.
  • Work collaboratively with staff in ODECE, the Division of Student Affairs, and Student Success to provide support, advising, and referral for students experiencing academic, personal, medical, or psychological distress.

Departmental Management:
  • Leads and develops the MSSC staff in effective mentoring and advising strategies for University students, with an emphasis on historically marginalized and excluded groups.
  • Develops and manages the departmental budget and provides overall operational planning for the MSSC.
  • Partners with the Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) to develop fundraising strategies for MSSC/ODECE and promotes relationships with alumni affinity groups.
  • Manages the daily operations of the MSSC building, including the reservation system, events, quarterly and yearly maintenance schedule, supply orders, furniture and technology upgrades, and overall building quality.

Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 8 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 6 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Doctorate in higher education administration, student personnel, counseling, or related field.
  • Strong relationship-building skills working with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
  • A thought leader with influence in the areas of multicultural and intercultural affairs, experience with assessing diversity-related efforts, and substantial cultural competency education.
  • Ability to effectively resolve conflict and manage crisis and emergency situations.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative, collaborative, and high morale working and student-centered environment.
  • Sensitivity to and awareness of the needs of diverse student populations, with an emphasis on those from historically marginalized and excluded groups.
  • Ability to promote collaboration and teamwork, with stakeholders involved in the decision-making process.
  • Knowledge of college student development, grounded in literature and scholarship.
  • Demonstrated experience in budget management.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising and strong supervisory skills.
  • Proven knowledge of strategic planning and vision development.
Typical Hiring Range $75,044.98 - $108,882.10 How is pay for new employees determined at GW?
