Job Summary:

 

True to Miami's tradition and identity, the Armstrong Student Center serves as the family room for campus, contributes to student learning and development and creates a sense of community and belonging. The 215,000 square foot facility houses the Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion, the Center for Student Engagement, Activities and Leadership, the Center for Career Exploration and Success, nine dining venues and an esports gaming lounge. The facility features an 8000 square foot ballroom, a 500-seat theater, the Red Zone (game room), a meditation and reflection room, the student senate chamber and numerous small and medium sized meeting rooms. The Armstrong Student Center manages approximately 3000 events annually, including many high profile university events. The Armstrong Student Center is a model on campus for sustainability and recycling initiatives. Staff in the Armstrong Student Center also manage the Commuter Resource Center and partner closely with Orientation and Transition Programs to provide support to commuter students.

 

Duties/Physical Demands:

This position reports directly to the Assistant Vice President for Student Life in the division of Student Life. The Director of the Armstrong Student Center is responsible for the fiscal, policy, facility, and operation of the Armstrong Student Center. Key responsibilities include:
• Supervision and development of a team of eight full-time staff and approximately 70 student staff who manage the 215,000 square foot facility and nearly 3000 events annually
• Management of a $6 million budget funded primarily through student fees and event revenue
• Ensuring the student center is an inclusive and equitable environment for all students
• Maintain collaborative relationships with essential university departments including but not limited to building occupants, Miami Dining, Conference and Event Services, Recreational Sports and Physical Facilities
• Maintain a clean and safe facility, ensuring repairs and improvements are planned and completed in a timely manner
• Implement an student-centered, equitable and consistent space reservation and event planning process that includes both student center space and outdoor spaces used primarily for student activities
• Partnering with Orientation and Transition Programs to provide programs and services to support commuter students and manages the commuter resource center
• Oversee work with Conference and Event Services for the implementation of summer conferences, wedding and major campus events such as Alumni Weekend
• Oversee initiatives to be a leader on campus for sustainability programs
• Advise a 15 member Armstrong Student Center Board
• Lead assessment and strategic planning initiatives
• Ensure effective communication, branding and social media strategies
• Serve on University and Divisional committees
• Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Master's Degree in student development, higher/adult education, student personnel, business or closely related field with seven years of closely related professional experience.

 

Desired Qualifications:

Doctorate Degree in student development, higher/adult education, student personnel, business or closely related field with 10 years of closely related professional experience.

• Experience supervising staff and leading in an educational environment
• Extensive knowledge of University policies and procedures related to student unions and events
• Experience working with student workers and advisory boards
• Understanding and ability to apply concepts of student development
• Knowledge of risk management appropriate to the student center environment

• Ability to conduct assessments and create long range strategic plans

• Ability and willingness to occasionally work evenings, nights and/or weekends
