General Statement
Established in 1997 by the Associated Students of Montana State University, the MSU Leadership Institute is dedicated to offering students leadership opportunities, professional development, guidance, and networking resources. Serving as a catalyst for students’ innate leadership abilities, communication skills, and creativity, the Institute empowers individuals to excel in their future academic and professional pursuits.
The MSU Leadership Institute is committed to advancing Montana’s future by preparing citizens by fostering student participation and encouraging critical reflection on current and future leadership roles. Through translating innovative ideas into tangible actions, the Institute cultivates an environment conducive to nurturing student leadership initiatives.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Director, under the supervision of the Vice President for Student Success, oversees the development, coordination, and execution of a comprehensive strategy for programs, events, and student engagement within the Leadership Institute.
This includes but is not limited to:
  • Oversight of unit operations, budget, personnel, and related administrative functions.
  • Create and maintain working relationships with campus entities.
  • Provide direction and leadership through the collaborative development of leadership programming at Montana State University.
  • Prepare students and staff to be innovative leaders in a diverse global society.
  • Work directly with the Associated Students of Montana State University to support their training, development, and leadership initiatives.
  • Serve on the advisor team for the Associated Students of Montana State University.
  • Design and supervise leadership experiences for students affiliated with the Leadership Institute with university and community partners.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Master’s degree or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Demonstrated success in supervising staff and students through utilization of strong leadership and management skills.
  • Demonstrated competence in oversight of budgeting/accounting processes as well as interpreting financial information.
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating and implementing projects, goals, and initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop student-centered leadership programming.

  • Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Possess an understanding and knowledge of MSU organizational structure, policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated experience with program assessment.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and coordinating events, workshops and trainings.
  • Demonstrated experience with serving in some type of leadership role in a civic, community, business or political organization.

  • The Successful Candidate Will

    • Possess the clear ability to maintain confidentiality.
    • Demonstrate a willingness and ability to work special events during some evening and weekend hours.
