Director, JHTV Business Development

We are seeking a Director, JHTV Business Development to independently perform a variety of activities intended to source, shape and cultivate corporate partnerships that align with research and educational activities in the Whiting School of Engineering. Based in Johns Hopkins Office of Technology Ventures (JHTV), the position will report to the Senior Director for Business Development & Corporate Partnerships in JHTV and to the Senior Director of Corporate Engagements in the Office of the Vice Dean for Research and Translation (OR&T) in the Whiting School of Engineering (WSE). This position requires a deep understanding of the research and translational environments in both an academic and industrial setting and requires solid experience in facilitating industry agreements and excellence in consensus building. The position enables efficient onboarding of industry sponsored research at WSE, provides alliance management of resulting partnerships, including large-scale ones, and manages internal and external business development initiatives. This position requires the ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with industry representatives. The successful incumbent will be an active and integrated member of the JHTV Business Development and Corporate Partnerships team and requires working closely with colleagues at JHTV to ensure other successful WSE translational endeavors (e.g., invention disclosures, technology licenses, and start-up companies).

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Works closely with the Senior Director for Business Development & Corporate Partnerships at JHTV and Senior Director of Corporate Engagements at WSE and serves as the primary resource/liaison for coordinating potential and ongoing industry partnerships, develops and executes strategic plans for corporate partnerships with the WSE faculty, departments, research centers/institute and/or overall School.
  • Manages a wide range of potential and ongoing sponsored research partnerships and oversees day-to-day management of the needs of the WSE faculty related to an existing partnership, including reporting milestones/progress, facilitating expansion for that partner, as well as winding down projects that do not meet milestones.
  • Facilitates agreement terms that ensure protection of the JHU faculty member, JHU students, and the University by working closely with Johns Hopkins University Research Administration (JHURA), JHTV, and other Johns Hopkins departments, as needed.
  • Establishes workflows and processes for streamlining contract negotiations and accelerating the time to start sponsored research agreements by working closely with JHURA, JHTV, and other Johns Hopkins departments, as needed.
  • Works closely with the IP Managers, Technology Licensing Associates and other groups in JHTV on potential industry sponsored translational endeavors (e.g., invention disclosures, technology licenses, and start-up companies) from the WSE.
  • Coordinates with the JHTV’s Technology Transfer Office and FastForward to identify and coordinate opportunities with the WSE faculty. Collaborates with JHTV colleagues on events for venture capital investors and others from the investment industry in areas of interest to the WSE faculty.
  • Works with the WSE in initiating industry engagement for WSE including visits by industry representatives to JHU to meet with faculty, senior staff, and Hopkins leadership, as well as organizing JHU leadership, faculty, and senior staff to visit industry partners to explore opportunities for future or expanded collaboration.
  • Coordinates with the Associate Dean for External Relations Works and works closely with the Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations at WSE on industry sponsored gift related research and educational opportunities as well as industry relevant alumni opportunities.
  • Works closely with the Vice Dean for OR&T to coordinate industry sponsored research and potential joint WSE-industry government sponsored grants/contract research opportunities, including protection of proprietary/sensitive information flowing between partners.
  • Coordinates with the Vice Dean for Graduate Education & Lifelong Learning and the Vice Dean for Undergraduate Education at WSE on industry sponsored educational opportunities.
  • Establishes and maintains strategic contacts in industries pertinent to faculty in WSE. Contributes to an industry contact database used by JHTV for push and pull marketing efforts and general communications.
  • Assists WSE faculty in preparing and pitching specific JHU technologies at the appropriate audience level, announcing industry specific specialty funding programs, and developing creative new methods for engaging industry partners.
  • Provides periodic updates current/pending activities to senior leadership in the WSE and JHTV.

  • Ability to understand complex technologies, demonstrated by relevant technical training or industry/technology transfer experience.
  • Knowledge of intellectual property, technology transfer, and technology development, with experience in academic conflict of interest issues.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in engineering or life/physical sciences or MBA with an undergraduate degree in engineering or life/physical sciences required. Other advance degrees (e.g., Master Degree in Engineering) and/or combinations with directly related industry experience will also be considered.
  • Seven (7) years business development experience in industry or academia. Experience working in both an industrial R&D and academic research environment is not required but would be a plus.

Preferred Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizen or legal permanent resident required due to Federal Export Controls.

Starting Salary Range: Min $115,400 - Mid $158,700 - Max$202,000 (targeted salary $130,000, commensurate with experience)

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
