The Director of Information Technology & Data Security Officer is a key strategic leader at the Harvard University Employees Credit Union (HUECU) and a key technical advisor to the Senior Leadership Team and CEO.  Directly responsible for the operations and security of all IT infrastructure, telecommunications, and other technology functions for a $1 billion credit union with over 135+ employees. Leads and manages a team of 3-5 high-performing professionals to find solutions to manage business activities. Assessing risk and protect all systems to prevent unauthorized access to network resources and data. The Director IT will assist with strategy and planning, driving the information security multi-year roadmap, and coordinating project management and communications. In partnership with the Sr Team and the CEO, sets the vision for the broader information security program.


Job-Specific Responsibilities

Strategic Leader and Key Technical Advisor: 

•    Develops and manage an information security strategy.
•    Makes recommendations to Senior Leadership to support the strategic initiatives of HUECU.
•    Creates, implements, and continuously evaluates the organization’s technology roadmap.
•    Researches and evaluates new technology trends/products and identifies new market opportunities within the industry to grow the Credit Union.
•    Leads the HUECU Technology Committee - to gather input to set technology priorities, processing methods, working with the committee to identify strategic IT priorities, and advising senior management, the CEO, and the Board.
•    Collaborates with business unit owners and business application specialists to evaluate, select, and implement new technology applications.
•    Brings a creative and innovative approach to supporting and enhancing a hybrid work environment at HUECU.
•    Takes a risk management approach to adopting new technology, understanding its impact on IT security while supporting improved workflow and innovation across the organization.

Information Technology and Security Operations:  

•    Responsible for the data security and end-to-end operations IT infrastructure (LAN/WAN/Systems/Applications).
•    Builds and maintains systems that protect data while supporting a quality end-user experience for our employees that improves process flow, supports innovation, and fosters collaboration.
•    Administers network servers/firewalls and systems, assuring appropriate security controls and user access levels; selects and loads required software, performs regular system back-ups, virus detection, and ensures that system maintenance is performed as needed.
•    Develops, maintains, and tests disaster recovery programs. Documents and reports any tests of the program as required.

Project Management:

•    Leads implementation and maintenance of all new and existing technology platforms, including the management of vendors.
•    Negotiates and manages IT-related vendor relationships and performs due diligence on potential new service providers.
•    Develops and delivers all data and information security programs as well as related training for all staff.
•    Ensures timely completion of all IT audits/state exams and risk assessments and communicates these activities to Senior Management, regulators, and the Board of Directors as required.    

Team Management and Relationship Duties:

•    Manages the IT budget, including negotiating and purchasing hardware, software, and equipment within established budgetary guidelines.
•    Builds and maintains a positive working relationship with Harvard University IT
•    Leads and manages a team of 3-5 high-performing professionals to find solutions to manage business activities.
•    Performs other job-related functions as required. 


Basic Qualifications

•    BA/BS degree required.
•    A minimum of 10 years of systems-related experience and at least 5 years of experience working with information security issues and technologies.
•    Deep understanding of risk and risk assessment, information security and data privacy laws, and accepted industry practices.
•    Previous management experience required.


Additional Qualifications and Skills

•    IT experience in the financial services industry is desirable.
•    Ability to develop and maintain highly effective, collaborative relationships as a leader, a trusted advisor, and a consultant.
•    Excellent technology management skills and demonstrated ability to lead through influence and negotiation.
•    Demonstrated ability to innovate and think strategically.
•    Strong project management skills,
•    Must have experience negotiating IT vendor contracts.
•    Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, as well as experience presenting to senior management.
•    Must demonstrate a strong customer orientation while managing multiple risks and balancing priorities and projects. 


Working Conditions

This position has on-call responsibilities, call-in and out of hours, work is required.   

Interview and onboarding activity for this position may be conducted via telephone & Zoom video conferencing, based on the department’s current presence on campus. 

Harvard University Employees Credit Union (HUECU) is an on-campus community and all positions are based in Boston and Cambridge. 

The majority of jobs at HUECU are hybrid remote/office. During the initial 90-day training period, new employees may be expected to work in the office more frequently, up to full time. When appropriate, remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered (CT, MA, MD, ME, NH, NY, RI, NH, and VT).  Additional details and expectations will be discussed during the interview process.
