SALARY AND BENEFITS:
The salary range will be from $125,000 - $135,000 per year.
This position is a Management Personnel Plan (MPP) position in the CSU, and serves at the pleasure of the President.
The CSU enjoys a generous benefits program with employer paid life insurance ($100,000), as well as health, dental, and vision insurance with the monthly premium largely paid by the CSU. Additionally, we offer a broad range of other benefits which includes dependent and health care reimbursement accounts, tuition fee waiver, 401k, 457 and 403(b) plans.

ABOUT THE POSITION:
In his/her role as the Director of the Institute for STEM Education the incumbent supports an eleven member Board of Directors in their efforts to coordinate and enhance existing STEM Education activities at CSUEB and throughout the region. Working with the board, the Director will sustain and advance the operation of the Institute, develop grant proposals, and plan and assist development/implementation of new STEM Education initiatives aimed at recruiting, supporting and preparing students for success as they pursue STEM college/career pathways (including but not limited to STEM teaching pathways). He/she will represent the University when interacting with other STEM Education partners and institutions.
The Director will assist in building and maintaining partnerships with P-12 schools and districts and increase collaboration with community colleges to create seamless pathways for degree completion. Additional responsibilities include management of the Institute including supervision of staff, budget development, grants management/reporting, aiding with initiatives designed to recruit students into STEM careers (including careers as math and science teachers), supervision of student and faculty resources provided by the Institute, and coordination of STEM content preparation programs and courses for single subject and multiple subject credential students. Additionally, the Director works with local school districts to create and lead teacher preparation programs-that assist science teachers and those who wish to teach science in their work.
This individual also leads the East Bay STEM Network, a regional effort (across Contra Costa and Alameda counties) to increase STEM learning opportunities from preschool through four year colleges/universities (i.e. cradle to career) and to increase the number and diversity of students pursuing STEM related college career pathways.
This is a temporary appointment contingent upon grant funding.
Leadership and coordination of STEM education programs at CSUEB
* Lead and expand CSUEB's efforts in STEM education such that the university will have a regional and national influence.
* Ensure that the different STEM education activities at CSUEB work together in a coordinated fashion.
* Strategic planning of STEM education activities to eliminate duplication an'd increase efficiency and effectiveness of programs.
Support of faculty STEM education grant proposals.
* Provide technical support for grant writing.
* Identify new funding opportunities that build upon and leverage current programs and develop new initiatives.
* Collaboration arid coordination of grant writing efforts with the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs.
* Expand recruitment and involvement of CSUEB faculty in STEM Education programs and increase the capacity of faculty to write successful STEM education grants.
* Lead efforts to build the CIRCLE initiative and the CIRCLE building.
Implementation of STEM education activities
* Assist faculty in the implementation of funded STEM activities.
* Interface between faculty and the CSUEB Foundation related to the establishment of subcontracts and sub-awards, hiring and management of grant personnel, and financial reporting.
* Has leadership role in the implementation and management of STEM education activities only where the Executive Director serves as the Pl, Co-Pl, Co-I or key personnel.
* Establish and maintain partnerships with other universities, community colleges, K-12 institutions (county offices of education, school districts and schools), national laboratories, industry partners and other STEM education institutions (museums, etc.).
* Serve as the primary contact with the CSU Chancellor's office related to system-wide STEM education programs (e.g., COAST, CSUPERB) and other CSU system STEM initiatives.
Management of the Institute for STEM Education
* Establish, manage and supervise the various programs and activities of the Institute for STEM Education.
* Supervision of Institute staff and grant staff (Foundation employees), development of STEM education outreach programs, and development of student and faculty resources (for STEM programs and opportunities).
* Foster cooperative relationships between members of the College of Science and the College of Education and Allied Studies to advance STEM Education.
Coordination of STEM Subject Matter Programs
* Coordinate STEM subject matter teacher preparation programs (e.g., single subject and multiple subject preparation programs, foundation math/science programs).
* Coordinate programs with the Liberal Studies programs and course offerings of STEM courses in the multiple subject preparation program (Liberal Studies).
* Serve as the primary resource for issues and requirements related to teacher preparation, professional development and retention. These responsibilities require expertise in standards and regulations from agencies such as the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing and the federal and California Departments of Education.
Coordination of East Bay STEM Network
* Raising funds to support the Network and its various initiatives.
* Recruit and staff key groups within the East Bay STEM Network including the Steering Committee, Executive Committee, and numerous "action groups" working to overcome barriers to students' progress in STEM as they move along the PK-14 education continuum. "Staffing" such groups includes strategic planning, ongoing data collection and reporting, organizing meetings and developing meeting materials, meeting follow-up, list management, developing grant proposals/reports, planning and assisting with the development/implementation of new STEM Education initiatives.
* Participate in regular calls and quarterly meetings of the larger statewide California STEM Learning Network (CSLNet), and respond in a timely manner to CSLNet requests for assistance.
* Develop and maintain ongoing, network-wide communications efforts including a regular newsletter and website.
Knowledge and/or experience with STEM education support programs, especially K-12 pre-service and in service teacher programs. Knowledge and/or experience with K-12 teacher recruiting, professional preparation, professional development and retention. Knowledge of the challenges and priorities of Title I, Program Improvement schools, at the institutional, administrator, and teacher levels. Knowledge of regulations and requirements related to teacher preparation, professional development and retention from appropriate agencies such as the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, California Department of Education and U.S. Department of Education. Knowledge of STEM funding opportunities and funding agencies. Knowledge of key elements for successful faculty and K-12 collaborative development of competitive STEM grant proposals, implementation and management.
Understanding the distinction between Research & Development grants and Development grants and the institutional strategies necessary to develop competitive Research and Development proposals. Knowledge of key elements in laying the foundation for program sustainability beyond the initial grant. Knowledge of Institutional Review Board and Human Subjects requirements and regulations.
Excellent management skills. Ability to lead and collaborate with teams composed of various constituencies. Excellent writing and communication skills. Ability to develop complex, multi-year budgets, provide pre-award and post technical assistance. Ability to build and support broad inter-segmental advisory board. Ability to prepare and negotiate complex contracts and memoranda of understanding for grant sub-awards.
Bachelor's degree plus post-baccalaureate training. Experience with Science education either as a teacher or administrator, at the K-12 or post-secondary level; preferably both.
Three years of senior level administrative experience, including supervision, budget, planning, public speaking and leadership.
Experience writing and managing grant proposals and projects.
Experience working with community organizations, schools, and districts on partnerships and various projects.
