The Ohio State University College of Medicine (OSUCOM) seeks an accomplished and innovative scientist and leader to serve as its next Director of the Institute for Behavioral Medicine Research (IBMR). Established in 1996, the IBMR was created to conduct and expand interdisciplinary collaborations involving social and behavioral influences on the immune response and health.  The IBMR faculty take a multidisciplinary approach to conduct research on mind, brain, and body interactions.

Position Overview
The IBMR is comprised of twenty-one faculty members. Total external funding is ~$13M,  including multiple research grants from the NIH and  DOD.  Our researchers represent expertise in the fields of immunology, microbiology, neuroscience, psychiatry, psychology, and oncology. Additionally, the IBMR faculty are involved with several individual and institutional training grants.

This is an exceptional opportunity for a collaborative leader to foster growth of an interdisciplinary research ecosystem at one of the nation's premier academic institutions. OSU currently has expertise across all basic sciences, translational research, and clinical care. The new IBMR Director will leverage existing strengths and create new initiatives, with the goal of integrating and expanding Behavioral Medicine research. It is expected that the Director will foster IBMR growth and sustainability through collaboration with the COM, Wexner Medical Center and other Colleges. The Director will elevate the local and national reputation of the Institute through the creation and dissemination of new knowledge and its translation to medical practice.

 
Duties and Responsibilities
The Director has overall responsibility for the Institute's personnel, programs, operations, and execution of its mission and vision. Specifically, the Director shall:

  • Oversee the development and execution of IBMR’s vision and strategy;
  • Create a dynamic and collaborative ecosystem for research and discovery focused on behavioral medicine within the IBMR and across the medical center, the College of Medicine and other Colleges at OSU;
  • Oversee programming, budget, and development of key performance indicators through evaluation and assessment of Institute programs and initiatives to measure progress toward achieving goals;
  • Increase extramural funding for IBMR investigators;
  • Ensure optimal utilization of research space for the organization;
  • Foster the growth and sustainability of the Institute through faculty recruitment and retention, collaboration with Department Chairs and other Institute/Center Directors in the COM and Wexner Medical Center and other Colleges
  • Grow the inter/national reputation of the Institute;
  • Support, mentor and develop learners, staff and faculty;
  • Support philanthropic efforts for the IBMR.
     

The Director of the IMBR will join a group of other OSU Institute/Center Directors from the Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute (DHLRI), The Center for the Advancement of Team Science, Analytics, and Systems Thinking (CATALYST), the Nisonger Center, and the Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS) and participate in the Basic Science Chairs/Center & Institute Directors meetings.

PhD candidates are expected to have a track record of working with physicians and physician-scientists to create translational research.  MD and MD/PhD candidates are expected to have a track record of working with basic scientists to create translational opportunities.  The Director is expected to sustain and build  research initiatives to drive innovation in discovery and translation to patient care and outcomes.
Minimum Qualifications
- MD, MD/PhD or PhD in medicine, neuroscience, psychology, immunology, microbiology, or related fields;
- Active NIH-funded research program
- National/international  reputation with a proven track record of academic excellence
- Proven
well-rounded administrative, scientific, and financial management expertise
- Experience in attracting new philanthropy to support the academic mission
- Possess strong leadership acumen and mentoring skills and experience
- Proven commitment to diversity & inclusion
- Demonstrated ability to lead/engage/inspire a large/complex research community
- Experience interacting with a broad range of constituencies and a record of collaborative, team-science approaches
- Extensive experience in an academic medical center and higher education institution
- Proven experience in the successful recruitment and retention of researchers, faculty and staff
