Position Summary
The Director, Hector and Gloria Lopez Scholars is responsible for providing administrative leadership and direct services to ensure efficient and effective operations of the program with the goal of serving the needs of low-income, first-generation college students. The Director, Hector and Gloria Lopez Scholars reports to the Associate Provost of Student Success.
The Hector and Gloria Lopez Foundation (HGLF) is committed to increasing the number of university graduates with a bachelor’s degree, providing the resources to graduate debt-free on a path to a rewarding career and the leadership skills needed for future success. This is a grant-funded position with an anticipated end date of June 1, 2029. Position may be shortened or extended based on funds availability and the needs of the university.

Description of Job Duties
  • Creates purposeful interactions with students to design individualized, student-centered educational plans that lay the foundation for student success. Assesses the academic and supportive needs of the project participants.
  • Assists students by addressing academic and probationary concerns and connects them with appropriate support services; provides financial aid counseling.
  • Conveys implications of various policies and procedures related to academic progress, dropping courses, and satisfactory academic progress.
  • Provides goal-oriented academic advising to foster informed choices in students’ educational planning and career exploration.
  • Develops tutoring schedules based on individual student needs and academic preparation.
  • Provides high-quality customer service to HGLF participants, students, the university, and the community.
Job Duty Name Manage Programming
Description of Job Duties
  • Develops innovative strategies to increase participation, retention, and completion of the López Scholars.
  • Coordinates opportunities for tutoring, summer internships, seminars, and educational activities designed to prepare students for graduation, professional career, and/or graduate school.
  • Develops communication plans and publicity through various forms of communication, including social media platforms.
  • Coordinates efforts with the First Year Experience Seminar & Learning Community to promote the success of the López Scholars.
  • Collaborates with Offices of First Year Engagement, Career Engagement, Housing and Residence Life, Advising, Study Abroad, Students Success, Financial Aid, and Registrar, among others, in support of the López Scholars’ academic and professional success.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Description of Job Duties
  • Creates, implements, and assesses program events such as conferences, workshops, lectures, meetings, and educational cultural trips to meet clearly defined program objectives.
  • Gathers, analyzes, and reports data to identify areas that need improvement.

Description of Job Duties
  • Maintains program files, electronic data, student records, student grades, and /or other documentation as required; monitors academic progress, services, and participation in the program.
  • Oversees collection of data and enters data related to the program services, goals, and objectives in preparation for monthly reports.
  • Maintains accurate participation and financial records for the López Scholars program and activities.
  • Attends monthly meetings with HGLF staff to provide updates on students’ academic progress and usage of student support.

  • Prepares and monitors budgets for programs and events.
  • Develops and runs procurement initiatives.

  • Supervises and trains student tutors and/or peer mentors to promote and facilitate program.

Qualifications


Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent analytical, verbal & written communication skills.
  • Excellent human relations and communication skills and the ability to work with professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Proficiency in handling multiple priorities, meeting deadlines, and problem-solving is also required.
  • Strong budget management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
  • Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University
Required Education
Master’s Degree in Education, Counseling, Humanities, Social Science, or related field.
Required Work Experience
  • Three (3) years of experience working with post-secondary students in a professional setting.
  • Two (2) years of budget management experience.
  • Bilingual in the Spanish language.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Six (6) years of experience working with post-secondary students, specifically first-generation students.
  • Experience with Banner, Navigate, Qualtrics, and other academic software.
  • Experience with grants budget oversight.
  • Experience with program evaluation and assessment.
  • Higher education experience.
Required Certifications, Licenses or Registrations
Must have a valid driver license, driving record that is insurable by UIW insurance carrier, and be at least 21 years of age, as required to drive for UIW.
Work Hours
Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm with extended hours as needed, especially in the planning and execution of events, to meet departmental goals.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to lift up to 15lbs of event supplies, to include reaching overhead, bending, squatting to retrieve/set-up event materials.
  • Ability to push/pull event carts holding up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to actively engage in events for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to regularly move about campus and event venues to actively engage faculty, staff, and potential/current students, as well as attend meetings on and off campus.
