The University of Washington is seeking an experienced professional to provide strategic planning and management leadership for health sciences administrative and business service activities that help support UW’s six health sciences schools, as well as at the University level. The Director for Health Sciences Strategic Planning & Development reports to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and to the Chair of the Board of Health Sciences Deans (BoHSD). The Board of Health Sciences Deans includes the deans of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health, and Social Work.

The Director will be responsible to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs for planning and coordinating of capital construction programs to provide facilities for the health sciences programs and ensuring they align with the priorities of the Provost and authorized budget. In consultation with and concurrence of the Provost, the Director is also responsible for planning and proposing assignment and re-assignment of space to programs across the health sciences schools.

The Director will be responsible to the Chair of BoHSD for the oversight of Health Sciences facilities management, and certain business administration and service activities necessary to the support the operations of the Health Sciences programs.

The Director will help foster joint-effort collaboration and coordination across the health sciences schools. Leveraging resources and expertise, the Director will seek and and identify opportunities of collaboration, common goals and objectives. This requires maintaining regular communications with the HS deans; serving as a point of contact for the HS deans and other HS colleagues; and identifying and elevating opportunities and issues to the attention of the BoHSD for discussion, planning and development.

In addition, the Director is responsible for developing collaborative relationships with key University-wide units that are critical to the mission of the Health Sciences at UW: Facilities/Capital Projects, Classroom Services, Office of Planning and Budgeting, UW Attorney General’s Office, Environmental Health & Safety and UW Police Department/Office of Student Life.

Duties & Responsibilities

Leadership and Management

University-level:

• Health Sciences Capital Projects: Jointly administer defined health sciences activities and be responsible for coordinating capital construction projects to provide facilities for health sciences programs, based on approved capital budget requests made by the health sciences deans and their directors. Serve as the primary representative of the Health Sciences Deans on capital projects when they involve multiple health sciences schools. At the delegation of the Provost and BoHSD, serve as the chair or key participant on committees and teams throughout the capital project planning, design, and construction phases. This involves mutual representation of the Provost and deans’ priorities and goals to be incorporated into the planning, design, and construction work; and proactive assessment of issues and concerns that are brought to the attention of the Provost, deans, key stakeholders, and other members of leadership to identify solutions and facilitate resolutions.

Health Sciences Academic Services and Facilities Management:

• Health Sciences Academic Services and Facilities: Leadership, planning, and oversight of this service unit that is responsible for providing facilities, classroom support, security, and building management that support health sciences programs and activities.
• Assignment and re-assignment of research, classroom and other space across the Health Sciences programs.
• Ensure financial management and sustainability within the Health Sciences Services operating budget authority and other related resources, and within priorities established by the Provost based on a strategic planning process.

Health Sciences-level:

• Strategic Planning and Development: Leveraging resources and expertise, seek and identify opportunities of collaboration, common goals and objectives amongst the HS schools. Initiate and maintain regular communications with the HS deans; serve as a point of contact for the HS deans and other HS colleagues; and identify and elevate critical issues to the attention of the BoHSD for discussion, planning, development and implementation.
• Health Sciences Affiliation Agreements and Contracts: Serve as the primary liaison, reviewer, and co-signatory on affiliation agreements and contracts for the five health sciences schools, not including the School of Medicine. This includes oversight and coordination across the five health sciences schools, and in collaboration with School of Medicine, to ensure information privacy and security requirements, accreditation requirements, alignment with the Health Sciences Immunization Program (HSIP), all current laws, policies, and regulations are consistent in term, practice, and application. The Director, in coordination and collaboration with the health sciences schools and University-wide units, is responsible for establishing a regular schedule to conduct a holistic review of agreement and contract templates, used by the five health sciences schools, to recommend changes and edits to ensure compliance and consistent best practices.
• Health Sciences Inter-schools Support: Responsible for administrative and staff support to the Board of Health Sciences Deans. This includes support for the Inter-Professional Education Initiative (IPE).
• Health Sciences News and Community Relations: Provide joint oversight and supervision of the Associate Vice President/Director for the Health Sciences/UW Medicine News & Community Relations with respect to that individual’s responsibilities for Health Sciences news and community relations.
• Teaching and Instruction: The Director may request or be asked to teach a health sciences course, as approved by a health sciences school and in accordance with academic appointment policies.

Requirements include:

• Master’s degree in business, health administration, capital planning, or a closely related field, or equivalent experience. A health sciences professional degree (DDS, MD, MPH, MSW, ND, PharmD) or a Ph.D. in a related health sciences discipline is desirable.
• Minimum of 10 years of progressive responsibility and related experience that includes supervisory and management experience at a research institution of higher education or a large, complex organization.
• Successful candidate must demonstrate a high level of working knowledge of Health Sciences Schools’ teaching, research and program activities and be able to manage large, complex capital planning and other projects.
• Knowledge and experience in managing agreements and contracts

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Desired:

• A health sciences professional degree (DDS, MD, MPH, MSW, ND, PharmD) or a Ph.D. in a related health sciences discipline is desirable.
