Primary Purpose of Department
The Graduate School at UNC Charlotte fosters excellence in all dimensions of post baccalaureate studies and is the primary advocate for graduate education and for graduate students at the University. Established in 1985, the Graduate School offers 21 doctoral, 65 master’s degree programs, and more than 30 graduate certificate programs in a wide variety of fields and specialties ranging from architecture, biomedical engineering, computing, engineering, and health administration to history, teacher education, creative writing, business, nursing and social work. The Graduate School has over 700 members of the Regular Graduate Faculty teaching and mentoring more than 5,000 graduate students who come from nearly every state in the union and from a variety of countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, Central and South America.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Director of Graduate Academic Services ensures that all graduate academic policies and processes are logically communicated and supported. This includes overseeing academic processes for matriculated students, such as special requests, petitions, applications for graduation, and curricular modifications. This position supervises staff that function within the Academic Affairs unit of the Graduate School.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
As part of the Graduate School’s Leadership team, the Director will address issues, concerns and initiatives related to academic policies and processes. The Director will oversee the Graduate School’s academic efforts to support the graduation initiative for graduate level students. The Director will supervise a team of three staff members, who manage graduation clearance, academic petitions, and thesis/dissertation formatting.
Additional duties include:
● Administration of academic policy review and revision process
● Leadership in the graduate student suspension, termination and appeal process
● Oversight for various aspects for DegreeWorks
● Review of curricular proposals through Curriculog
● Oversight for the annual Catalog revisions
● Management of the annual metrics for the annual report
● Responding to faculty and student inquiries when escalated
● Representing the Graduate School on various student related committees
● Manage the Graduate Academic Services communication plan, including Salesforce implementation
● Apply accreditation standards to ensure compliance of graduate programs with SACSCOC guidelines
● Collaborate with Financial Aid and Admissions to ensure students can register, enroll and receive financial aid
● Work with other team members and graduate program directors to promote the success of matriculating students.
● Support the graduate Commencement ceremonies, as needed
● Supervise and mentor direct reports
The position has autonomy, authority and accountability for academic decisions and exceptions, as needed.
As a member of the Graduate School’s leadership team, the Director will lead by example and set the expectations for the rest of the unit. Remote work is an option, as needed and when possible, based on the demands of the unit.
Minimum Education/Experience
  • Master’s degree (MA, MS, MBA, etc.).
  • At least three years’ experience working in higher education.
  • Demonstrated experience with supervision.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • A terminal degree.
  • Prior work experience with graduate students, as well as experience developing academic policy.
  • Experience with Banner system.
  • Formal role as a supervisor.
