JOB SUMMARY

The Director of the Genomics Institute Office of Diversity (GIOD) provides leadership, management, and strategic vision for the development and implementation of DEI initiatives within the Genomics Institute of Baskin Engineering at the University of California Santa Cruz.

They are independently responsible for program development, implementation, and evaluation, long-term strategic planning, budget management, identification of new funding sources, and promoting institutional practices that promote and nurture a more just, inclusive, and equitable academic research culture. A critical role of the DEI Program Manager is to advance policies and practices that attract diverse students, staff, and professionals to the Genomics Institute (GI) and to promote a more inclusive culture within the GI. This is accomplished through outreach and education of our constituencies, which, in addition to the GI organization, includes K-12 schools, community colleges and universities, and the larger genomics research community. The director supports the PI on the NGHRI DAP (R25), an undergraduate research training program that has the mandate to increase the number and academic/career success of underrepresented students engaging in genomic research.

The Director manages a small staff including the GIOD Program Coordinator and student workers to implement GIOD programing, run program events and ensure regular meetings with program participants.

The Director reports directly to the Executive Director and supports GI leadership by advising them on climate issues and policy compliance. In concert with GI leadership and the GI Faculty Director of Diversity,  GIOD director  supports the efforts of Baskin Engineering and UCSC Graduate Division related to diversity outreach and retention program development.

More specifically, responsibilities include these main areas of work:
- Management of federally-sponsored diversity/inclusion programs, such as the NHGRI DAP (R25) funded Research Mentoring Institute (RMI) program.
- Management and coordination with partner institutions of an NHGRI funded undergraduate summer research training program, known as the GREAT (Genome Research Experiences to Attract Talented Undergraduates into Genomic Fields to Enhance Diversity); the GREAT partners are California State University Monterey Bay and University of Puerto Rico Rio Piedras.
- Placement of RMI and GREAT scholars in research groups and supporting/monitoring progress.
- Support efforts of Baskin Engineering and UCSC Graduate Division related to diversity outreach and retention program development.
- Development of effective approaches for outreach, recruitment, and retention of underrepresented students in STEM majors relevant to genetics and genomics (biology, chemistry, bioinformatics, etc.)
- Development and instruction of workshops that advance undergraduate research skills and graduate school preparation.
- Identification of new funding opportunities through partnerships and grant applications.
- Generation of campus and public education programming relevant to genomic science.
- Continuous monitoring and assessment of program effectiveness.

 

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $99,650 - $117,000/year.  Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

40% - Management of Training and Outreach Programs for the Genomics Institute

  • Design, develop, and implement comprehensive diversity programs aimed at both on-campus and off-campus constituents both within the Genomics Institute (GI) and more broadly in support of other campus units such as the Grad Div and the School of Engineering.
  • Oversee recruitment and selection of undergraduate students for RMI awards, placement of students in labs for mentored research training, and ongoing academic and professional guidance to ensure that students advance to the next level.
  • Bring genomics awareness to the UCSC campus and the greater Santa Cruz communities through workshops, talks, lab tours, and theme events (such as DNA DAY, the Genome Browser Workshop, etc.).
  • Fulfill the diversity mission of the Genomics Institute by promoting a campus climate that values the principles of equity and inclusion and embraces difference.
  • Develop and execute new diversity program features by working with faculty, development officers, other campus partners and campus leadership.
  • Facilitate and hire instructors for two annual bioinformatics intensives for undergraduate learners.

20% - Institutional Partnerships

  • Work in collaboration with intra- and extra-mural institutional leaders, such as deans, program directors, and the UCSC Office of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion to strategize on new diversity funding opportunities, and to share knowledge and best practices related to challenges and strategies concerning academic diversity.
  • Serve on advisory boards and campus committees that focus on diversity issues, such as the advisor to Women in Science and Engineering (WISE), the Science & Justice Research Center Advisory Board (only non- faculty member) and the Chancellor's Diversity Advisory Committee (DAC).
  • Serve as a standing member of the Genomics Institute DEI Committee and assist the Faculty Director of Diversity in running committee meetings.
  • Provide guidance on effective communication between GI members, the committee and GI Leadership.
  • Establish and cultivate partnerships, such as collaborative recruitment and outreach efforts, retention programming, and cost sharing with UCSC leadership.
  • Cultivate broad-based partnerships with faculty and program leaders on other UC, Cal State and community college campuses and in national organizations related to academic diversity in STEM fields.

20% - Administration and Financial Management

  • Direct the programs in a manner that ensures compliance with applicable state and federal laws and guidelines with respect to diversity issues. Track and assess program participants' progress, performance, and retention rate.
  • Prepare reports and narrative for reports and grant proposals to the primary funding agencies (such as NHGRI, NIH, and NSF). Represent the GI and UCSC at annual meetings of the funding programs.
  • Oversee the creation and management of a comprehensive, confidential database of past and present awardees and RMI participants for program administration, evaluation, and tracking.
  • Develop and manage program budgets; approve expenditures including disbursement of awards and programming costs; and maintain compliance with University, agency, state and federal guidelines and policies.
  • Identify new funding sources and develop proposals as appropriate.

10% - Development

  • Write renewal proposal for the NHGRI-DAP at each cycle of the award. Participate in grant writing efforts of institutional partners (UCSC faculty, other program directors, and external partners as appropriate).
  • Work with the GI grants team and the Office of University Relations to identify and pursue funding opportunities for existing and new programs.

10% - Program Evaluation

  • Work with external evaluators as needed to conceptualize, design, and implement evaluation methods and milestones for DEI goals of the GI.
  • Assess effectiveness of the various diversity programs under the purview of the GI, such as applicant pool numbers and demographics, retention data, progress toward degree, participant tracking, and effectiveness of workshop and outreach activities.
  • Analyze the results, define problems and new objectives, and develop improvements and new programming as needed to help achieve the overall goals.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Demonstrated significant achievements in diversity-related work.
  • Demonstrated skill leading and collaborating with others, including academic leadership on diversity-related development efforts to change organizations.
  • Knowledge of history and understanding of dynamics of race, ethnicity, sex, sexual orientation, disability, age, and economic class in the United States and in higher education.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and effectively within a large institution and to communicate and interact effectively with diverse campus constituencies (students, staff, and faculty) and federal, state, and local agencies to effectively accomplish diversity-related missions.
  • Ability to act independently within broad procedural guidelines.
  • Strong analytical skills, including ability to work with qualitative and quantitative data.
  • Significant related experience, including demonstrated ability to independently develop, implement, and evaluate educational programs and events targeted to a diverse population of students and academic and staff employees.
  • Ability to identify, investigate, and facilitate problem resolution and to educate members of the university community effectively regarding issues of diversity, equity, and cultural sensitivity.
  • Experience in grant writing and reporting.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in delivering motivational and informational presentations to small and large groups.
  • Familiarity with the requirements and environment of university programs in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.
  • Comfort with complex information related to the fields of science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.
  • Ability to think strategically and creatively.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • A Master's or Doctoral degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience performing or supporting research in an academic research environment.
  • Experience managing award budgets.

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.

  • The selected candidate will be required to work primarily on campus, with periods of remote work possible based on operational needs.
