Job Description

Role Summary

The Director of Formación Continua will oversee all the STM’s continuing education initiatives and
programming in Spanish, including courses (online and in person), webinars, lectures, symposia, and
meetings, among others, to serve the theological, ministerial, and spiritual needs of Spanish-speaking
Catholics in the United States and around the world. The professional serving in this capacity will also
work on the development of resources in Spanish that accompany the above initiatives. A signature
perspective of the STM continuing education programs in Spanish is to promote Ignatian spirituality and
leadership, especially in collaboration with other Jesuit institutions and centers throughout the world. It
is expected that the Director of Formación Continua will continue this tradition and, occasionally,
coordinate initiatives and develop resources to engage Spanish-speaking audiences in Latin America.
The Director’s duties are to develop, market, implement, and evaluate programs; develop partnerships;
and generate revenue.  This person will work in collaboration with the Director of Continuing Education,
who oversees initiatives and programming in English, as well as other members of the Continuing
Education team. The Director of Formación Continua will manage resources allocated to advance initiatives in Spanish and will work with the university to secure other resources that will allow those programs to thrive. Depending on expertise and qualifications, the director will also teach graduate courses in her/his field of expertise as part of the STM curriculum in addition to this position.
The successful candidate will possess a substantive track record demonstrating success in leading,
implementing, and evaluating innovative, sustainable continuing education and/or similar programs in
topics relating to theology, ministry, faith and formation. Additional requirements include: demonstrated
experience developing, marketing, and building enrollment for new programs and proven ability to
manage staff, leading individuals to collaborate and achieve key organizational goals. Familiarity with
traditional pedagogy, as well as use of emerging educational delivery models (online, hybrid) are
essential for success. S/he is responsible for consultation about and design, implementation, and
revision of all STM Formación Continua courses. The work includes developing effective instructional
and communication strategies for the participants in the online and in person learning environments.
The Director is responsible for recruiting, training, and supporting the facilitators for online courses.
The Director must provide cost effective management of the unit and programs within budget; works to
ensure strong enrollments; develops and manages essential internal and external working relationships
and partnerships that ensure the success of the CE programs.
This position reports directly to the Dean of the School of Theology & Ministry.

This position will provide strategic and administrative oversight for all aspects of the Formación
Continua programs for the School of Theology & Ministry (STM) at Boston College.
The Director is responsible for all functions of Formación Continua, which provides online and in person
non-credit programming in Spanish.  The Director’s duties are to develop, market, implement, and
evaluate programs; develop partnerships; and generate revenue.
Essential Functions
●        35% Formación Continua Offerings
-Design and develop online courses and in-person pastoral initiatives and programs
schedule for the year
-Determine topics based on need, tradition, current events in the nation,
world, and the Church, new faculty publications with popular appeal, and
outreach to a variety of ministries and community organizing and leadership
initiatives.
-Determine, in conversation with the Hispanic ministry faculty and
based on input from Hispanic ministry leaders worldwide, the programs
and initiatives to be offered
-Determine the best platform to execute the programs and initiatives
-Develop new formation programs annually or as time/need arises
-Formulate program concept
-Select appropriate text and/or video resources, consistent with STM
pedagogy policy goals
-Compose web site description
-Work with the Assistant Director to:
o   Create production schedule to complete within projected launch
date
o   Liaise with the new online center for recording, editing, and
Canvas Catalog setup
- Invite speakers to participate in programming
-Determine appropriate presenters through recommendation, need for
professional content, timeliness, variety of topics and presenters, etc.
-Be present at the in person events and introduce speakers when
appropriate
-Be the “face” of STM Formación Continua at events
-Establish relationships with the STM Faculty and across the university.

●        35% STM Formación Continua Online Facilitators and Presenters
-Recruit and train potential and new facilitators in accordance with STM policy
-Provide ongoing guidance of course facilitators
-Report problems with course site and/or materials noted by the
facilitators, and resolve or refer to appropriate staff person
- Respond to Facilitator inquiries received via email
-Communicate changes (policy or course site technology) with immediate
impact throughout the year
-Observe and maintain records of areas of pedagogy in need of development
as policy change or facilitator training and updating
-Review and edit online course sites for clarity, appearance, completeness,
and navigation
-Recruit presenters for webinars and workshops
-Review and edit all course materials and all pages on course sites for grammar,
accuracy, clarity, appearance, and adherence to consistent style guidelines – per course

the development and delivery of continuing education programs at STM
-Continuously review competitors’ offerings and tailor offerings to stay ahead
of the competition
-Convene Formación Continua staff meetings
-Participate in STM Administrative Team meetings
-Participate in STM Committee work as needed
-Teach one for-credit course each semester for STM.

●        5% Strategic Planning and Financials
- Work with the Assistant Director to develop a strategic plan for STM Formación
Continua each year

●        Conduct yearly needs assessment, lead curriculum planning, course
development, and program evaluation
●        Recruit Formación Continua facilitators, presenters, and participants
●        Invite speakers to participate in Formación Continua programs
●        Review and set salaries for teaching faculty
●       Set course fees and speaker honorariums
●        Establish registration procedures; approve all requests or challenges for late
payments, course discounts, refunds, special registration situations needing
review, etc.
●        Establish, review, and revise STM Formación Continua policies and
procedures
●        Manage the implementation of change and communicate policies
●        Ensure the website is up-to-date
●        Meet regularly with the Dean for planning, direction, and decision making
purposes
●        Keep informed of trends and developments, including new approaches,
standards, and methodologies
●        Resolve complaints, issues, requests

Education/Training and Certification, Licensure, Registration Requirements

●        Ph.D. in Theology (preferably);
●        Must be fluent in Spanish and English (spoken and written);
●        Ministerial experience with Spanish-speaking communities in the United States, and
ideally in Latin America;
●        Teaching experience at the ministerial and academic levels;
●        Familiar with online course development software and techniques;
●        Familiarity with Roman Catholic polity and pastoral life is essential.
