Indiana University Public Safety pursues IU's commitment to providing the greatest degree of safety for all members of the IU community, consistent with the university's mission and environment, applicable legal and professional standards, and available resources. IU Public Safety directly oversees the IU Police Department University Environmental Health and Safety , and Emergency Management and Continuity  with a team of approximately 300 dedicated staff on a 24/7/365 operational basis across all campuses.

This position will hold the sworn rank of Major with the Indiana University Police Department (IUPD).

General Responsibilities

  • Performs investigations into major allegations of IUPD general orders and IU policies; including, but not limited to, investigating officers/employees for possible criminal wrongdoing when warranted in coordination with the superintendent and/or independent investigators to include other state agencies.
  • Collaborate with departmental leadership to align investigative efforts with broader organizational goals.
  • Oversee internal affairs investigations process related to alleged misconduct or policy violations by department personnel, ensuring fairness, thoroughness, and objectivity in internal investigations
  • Prepare comprehensive reports on investigative findings and internal affairs matters
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of investigations and ensure compliance with reporting requirements.
  • Uphold the highest ethical standards and ensure compliance with all relevant laws, policies, and regulations.

EDUCATION

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in related field

Preferred

  • Master's degree

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 6 years of law enforcement experience that includes 3 or more years in supervisory/leadership role
  • Complex project management experience involving engagement and collaboration across a wide spectrum of diverse functions.

Preferred

  • Experience in higher education environment

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required

  • Valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire
  • ILEA (Indiana Law Enforcement Academy) certified upon date of hire
  • Complete and maintain all required annual law enforcement training and certifications as prescribed by IUPD, Indiana State Law, and the Indiana Law enforcement Training Board (ILETB) upon date of hire
  • Current and continued certification in university required courses such as CPR, AED, Blood Borne Pathogens, IDACS, etc. upon date of hire
  • Current firearms qualification upon date of hire

Preferred

  • ILETB Certified Instructor training upon date of hire
  • Graduation from advanced law enforcement management training (FBI National Academy, Southern Police Institute, or similar institution) upon date of hire

  • Required knowledge of compliance to the Clery Act, VAWA (Violence Against Women Act), Title IX, the FBI UCR/NIBRS and related legislation
  • Advanced knowledge of law enforcement accreditation standards, preferably standards established by the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA)

The role frequently requires the ability to remain in a stationary position and communicate effectively. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the working environment; handle or operate objects, controls, or tools listed above; ascend/descend ladders or stairs; position self to move at lower levels; and discern scents. The role requires the ability to lift and/or move more than 165 pounds. The role requires the ability to detect items in close proximity as well as far away; discern between colors; detect objects in peripheral space of self; discern items in detail; and detect how far away an object is. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
