Summary of Job Duties:

The Director will lead the newly designated Environment and Occupational Safety Department. The position reports to the VCFA.

Qualifications:

Required Education and/or Work Experience: Minimum qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, physics, engineering, occupational health and safety, or related fields; and, three years of supervisory experience.   Other job-related education and/or experience may be substituted for part of these requirements. 

Preferred Education and/or Work Experience: Preferred education includes an advanced degree  in chemistry, biology, physics, engineering, occupational health and safety, or related fields; and, at least five years of health and safety-related experience. Higher education experience is a plus.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The Director, Environment and Occupational Safety, provides leadership and direction for planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating the university-wide Environmental and Occupational Safety program ensuring the safety and health of faculty, staff, and students.  The Director oversees hazardous waste management; communicates verbally and in writing with regulatory agencies; oversees laboratory safety and compliance; enforces policies and procedures deemed unsafe or contradicts environmental or safety protocols; and, co-chairs the UAFS Safety Committee.  This position reports to the Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration. 
  • Responsible for maintaining a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner to foster teamwork and by providing leadership to subordinates.
  • Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty.
  • The ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others is necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: To perform the job successfully, the following competencies are required for the essential functions of this position:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of environmental and occupational safety and health
  • Special knowledge of and/or experience in one or more the following areas: chemical hygiene and laboratory safety, radiation safety and health physics, biological safety, job safety, fire and life safety, and plan review
  • Knowledge of fire and life safety codes and of regulatory requirements imposed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ), and Arkansas Department of Health (ADH), and of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards as adopted by the Arkansas Department of Labor (ADOL)


Additional Information:

Working Relationships: The Director will interact with a variety of personnel on campus.  They will closely work with the Physical Plant Director, the Director of Public Safety, and the department heads of all laboratories that produce hazardous and medical waste on campus.  The Director will also need to develop a working relationship with state environmental and occupational safety agencies.

List Employees Supervised: The Director will supervise one individual, the Environmental and Occupational Safety Technician.

Special Job Dimensions: Work performed primarily in an office setting.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly exhibits digital dexterity when entering data into computer. The employee will frequently walk around campus to monitor safety issues and spend a lot of time doing administrative work from a desk on a computer. Vision demands include close, relatively detailed vision when focusing on a computer screen. Employee regularly talks and hears. Employee occasionally lifts items up to 50 pounds. Routine work schedule Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm with occasional overtime and travel required

Salary Information:


$75,000-85,000/year, commensurate with education and experience
