Position Description

Responsible for the leadership, innovation, governance, and management necessary to identify, evaluate, mitigate, and monitor the university's operational and strategic risk. Develops Enterprise Risk and Insurance tools, practices, and policies to analyze and report enterprise risks, and to manage risks according to an enterprise risk management framework. Ensures the organization's risk management policies and strategies are in compliance with applicable regulations, rating agency standards, and strategic imperatives of the organization. Establishes the Enterprise Risk and Insurance architecture for the university. Oversees or monitors all operational risk management activities of the organization. Monitors and analyzes risks within the university's business units and reports on these risks to the VP Risk, Audit, and Compliance. Chairs or provides key inputs into the university's enterprise risk or other committee that oversees the enterprise risk management process and ensures alignment with organizational objectives. This position also has the responsibilities and accountable for supervising the Enterprise Risk and Insurance staff.  Ensuring effective hazard (typically insurable risks) risk management for the organization and supervising, leading and/or directing key risk stakeholders. This person typically owns the process of identifying, measuring, and managing insurable or hazard risks, developing reports and plans, and analyzing risk/insurance problems and defining and/or overseeing the implementation of the risk solutions that help optimize operations.

Educate and train university community regarding university risk management policies and procedures, along with information regarding the insurance program.  Also staying abreast of latest risk management and insurance trends and forecasting methods.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and implement a strategic plan for the University's property and casualty insurance program, along with the University's Workers' Compensation program.  Identify and implement mitigation options to address university exposures, determine policy limits and retention/deductible levels, self-insurance or commercial carrier options.  Lead Enterprise Risk and Insurance program for university affiliated corporations.
  • Oversee university insurance claims and litigation filings and settlements. Enterprise Risk and Insurance primary university liaison with university departments, University Counsel's Office, Audit Services, Athletics, insurance adjusters and university leadership as necessary. Ensure that risk and liability trend analysis and root cause analysis of claims and litigation issues are being done and share results and recommendation with VP Risk, Audit, and Compliance.
  • Develop and implement strategic plans for risk assessment processes to include; determining enterprise-wide risk appetites, risk tolerances, and mitigation options, which have the potential to lead to short term and long term cost reductions.  Investigate and analyses insurance market trends, compare to university programs and processes, and perform benchmark analysis. Research new risk and insurance technology available. Communicate savings and findings to VP Risk, Audit, and Compliance.
  • Communicate, educate, and build relationships within the University community to provide guidance and information regarding risk management processes and insurance program. Evaluate contracts and leases for risk and insurance language and exposures, make recommendation based on evaluation. 
  • Forecast, develop, and administer the Risk Management budget by analyzing industry trends, university losses, and potential exposures. Through analysis, determine possible methods to reduce and/or transfer costs.
  • Lead operations of the Enterprise Risk and Insurance Department.  Direct the recruiting, hiring, training, discipline, career planning and professional development of unit personnel.  Interact with staff to inform and involve them in department plans and goals.  Conduct performance evaluations, handle personnel issues, and lead effort in recruitment of vacant positions. Continue with professional development and continuing education opportunities in the risk management and insurance fields.  Final hiring and termination approval by VP Risk, Audit, and Compliance.
  • Represent the University in the competitive purchase process (RFP/RFI) for Brokage firms for all property/casualty insurance policies, including developing the language for the RFP/RFI and the review and recommendation for placement of coverage. 
  • Complete special projects and other duties as assigned by the VP Risk, Audit and Compliance.
