We are seeking a visionary leader to join our team as the Director of Disability Services and ADA Compliance Officer.

Under the general direction of the Senior Director for People Programs & Rewards, the Director of Disability Services is the leader responsible for compliance and oversight of our disability services office. This includes planning, establishment, and implementation of programs to maintain best practices, policies, and procedures that are necessary to provide reasonable job accommodation services. The director also acts as an advocate for those with disabilities, including staff, student employees, and faculty as well as in an advisory capacity to the campus on disability and accessibility related matters.

The Director serves as a subject matter expert and is responsible for ensuring adherence to University policies regarding accessibility, vocational rehabilitation, job accommodation, medical separation, and discrimination claims. The Director represents the Human Resources Department on campus-wide initiatives and committees and represents disability management perspectives on system-wide initiatives and committees. This role develops strategic initiatives that address compliance and inclusivity and provides direction towards creating an inclusive and diverse working environment.

As an ADA Coordinator for UC San Diego, the Director helps to ensure that UC San Diego staff, faculty, and students are provided appropriate means which provide access to buildings and facilities, programs, transportation services, web-based and print media information, events, housing, and suitable parking. This includes analyzing workforce data and regulatory trends, serving on advisory committees regarding accessibility and inclusion, including emergency evacuation, and recommends new initiatives in support of best practices while ensuring regulatory compliance.

The Director of Disability Services will play a pivotal role in shaping the landscape for UC San Diego to ensure a safe and inclusive work environment for all. The director will require collaborative partnership with the other Human Resources teams - including Policy, Benefits, and Organizational Effectiveness, as well as across campus with the office for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, Housing & Dining Services, Real Estate, Resource Management & Capital Planning, and executive leadership.

  • Broad knowledge of organizational and systemwide personnel policies and applicable laws and regulations. Maintains knowledge of applicable systemwide policies and procedures. Knowledge of law and related compliance requirements regarding ADA Compliance and Discrimination.

  • Thorough understanding of the Americans with Disabilities Act and of Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended, CA Fair Employment & Housing Act, Section 139.5 of the CA State Labor Code, and Rules and Regulations determined by the Rehabilitation Unit of OBD (Sections 4635 through 4647 and Section 49, 5410), Labor Code Section 132A, CA Family Rights Act, U.S. Family and Medical Leave Act, and Pregnancy Leave Act.

  • Demonstrated ability complete to complex analysis of case facts, policy, applicable law, and provide reasonable accommodation and accessibility recommendations. Demonstrated ability and experience in problem identification and problem solving techniques.

  • Strong management skills that include collaboration, coaching and developing subordinates; ability to build relationships. Demonstrated strong management and leadership skills with experience. Ability to promote a work environment that rewards individual and collective success, and the ability to motivate staff and act as a role model.

  • Direct knowledge of specific functions in a university's HR management information systems.

  • Strong communication skills with a diversity of communication styles; may make oral or written presentations.

  • Ability to make decisions regarding hiring, evaluating, and development of subordinates.

  • Thorough understanding of the unit goals and ability to determine the best way of achieving unit goals.

  • Demonstrated ability to handle extremely difficult or volatile situations / individuals effectively.

  • Demonstrated competency with and commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging.

  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

  • As part of the regular responsibilities of this position, the incumbent sees confidential documents which are used by management in developing positions related to collective bargaining, attends meetings where management positions and strategy regarding collective bargaining issues are discussed, and gathers data important to the formulation of management positions in collective bargaining. Therefore this position is designated as Confidential under HEERA.

  • Mandated Reporter: This position has been identified as a Mandated Reporter pursuant to the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and requires immediate reporting of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, or neglect of anyone under the age of 18. It is the responsibility of the Mandated Reporter to ensure that they obtain proper training in order to fulfill their reporting responsibilities as required by the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and University policy, and to complete and submit the required reports to the UC San Diego Police Department without delay.


Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $101,200 - $192,200 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $48.47 - $92.05

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
