General Summary

Eastern Michigan University’s College in Prison (CIP) program is a baccalaureate degree program located in the Women's Huron Valley Correctional Facility (WHV). The Director of CIP is to manage and supervise its established satellite campuses, and future facilities while supporting the Returning Citizen Fellows Program (RCF).

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manages the full cycle recruitment, retention, and degree completion objectives of CIP students.
  • Assist with the planning and implementation of all retention-related events.
  • Attend College fairs and/or meetings at WHV.
  • Direct students in the financial aid process, appeals, and financial aid reinstatements.
  • Conduct new Student Orientations.
  • Prepare student course materials, grades, and transcripts.
  • Review and conduct student degree audits to create long-term education plans for student success.
  • Meet with students pre-release, to determine wrap-around services the student will need upon re-entry to the community.
  • Assist students with filing non-academic complaints, grade disputes, and withdrawals with exceptions.
  • Communicate with students, through in-person visits at the correction facility, during weekly office hours, and by email through the JPAY network.
  • Direct students to appropriate internal and community-based programs and support services.
  • Coordinate with Correctional Facilities Education Principals and staff to identify time and classroom space to hold in-student meetings.
  • Initiate contact with faculty, ombudsman, Center for Student Success, and other departments to assist students with questions and needs utilizing a total case management method.
  • Act as Liaison between students, various EMU offices, and WHV.
  • Coordinate information sharing and processing between CIP, admissions, financial aid, and records office.
  • Coordinate Graduation Ceremonies with the College and WHV.
  • Direct returning students/citizens to RCF and other resources.
  • Execute individual caseload outreach in tandem with AmeriCorps Navigation Returning Citizen Service members and intervention plan milestones.
  • Represent the University on the MDOC’s Michigan Higher Education Consortium.
  • Participate in regional or national workshops and forums on college in-prison and re-entry.
  • Perform other duties assigned by Management.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in human services, education, or related field. 
Two to four years working in higher education (student service of academic support).
Excellent communication skills.
This position will require a LEIN (Law Enforcement Information Network) clearance.

Preferred Qualifications:


One year of working with education and prison education programs is preferred.

Graduate degree preferred.
