Director, Clinical Engineering

The Director of Clinical Engineering will support all Health System entities, including University and Community Health which includes the four hospitals, clinics, and stand service areas that provide patient care.
This position is accountable for organizing, leading, and managing the Clinical Engineering functions within all University and Community Health entities. Develops strategies which address the business needs of the organization and ensures a commitment to excellence.

  • Builds collaborative relationships with operational and clinical leaders across all entities of University and Community Health systems.
  • Leads the clinical engineering systems.
  • Directs the Clinical Engineering and Transportation Services departments and assists management in setting the strategic direction of that area to maximize its contributions.  
  • Designs and develops procurement plans and programs to assist in implementing authority guidelines and objectives.
  • Develops and implements policies programs and procedures that guide and support the provision of services. Prepares and manages the operating and capital budget. Assesses the need for additional resources and makes recommendations as appropriate to division chief.
  • Maintains fiscal accountability and adheres to annual budget. 
  • Participate in leadership activities to support the strategic plan of the Medical Center.
  • Design and Implement a long range financial planning process for medical technology which prioritizes replacement of technology over time:  Utilize AHA life expectancy, risk modeling tools, service line leader input, and health system capital targets to optimize capital expenditures.
  • Execute HS annual capital plan to achieve efficiency, cost management and to minimize risk.  Annual capital program expenditures are ~25-30M per year.
  • Design and Develop a HS wide medical device cybersecurity program. Program components include NIST framework, Passive Vulnerability Scanning Technology, patching for medical devices, and MAC/IP based tracking of technology
  • Design and implement an Imaging Service divisions for Clinical Engineering which will allow for the effective insourcing of service from OEM imaging companies to MC CE employees.  Provide significant cost savings opportunities through effective service and risk strategies.
  • Conduct detailed analysis of significant capital purchases, including ROI development, strategic negotiations, and fleet level purchasing programs.
  • Design, develop, and implement a medical device contracting process which protects the medical center from technologies which do not function as intended.  Negotiate beneficial contract terms for significant medical device purchases.
  • Oversee medical equipment planning process to include full responsibility for large capital planning events (i.e. UHE tower 75M dollars in technology integration and installation: IVY Mt. MSK 35M capital planning process.)
  • Oversee the support of numerous complex Information Technologies including distributed and virtualized servers, large wired and wireless networks, and desktop computing platforms.
  • Represent UVA Health Clinical Engineering in national CE related associations to lead the industry related to medical device contracting process and beneficial terms.
  • Contribute to medical technology strategy for initiatives which support improved patient outcomes including falls prevention, HAI injury reduction, CAUTI/CLABSI reductions, and enhanced patient satisfaction.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Position Compensation Range: $133,016.00 - $212,825.60 Annual

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: Bachelor’s Degree required. Equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of degree. Master’s Degree in a health or business field preferred.
Experience: 5 years relevant experience in Clinical Engineering required. Supervisory or Management experience preferred.
Licensure: None required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
