Job Duties and Responsibilities
Roles associated with the CESHH Director position include, but are not limited to:
  • Advance interdisciplinary research across the Center to improve understanding of the impact of environmental exposures/stressors on human disease and adverse health outcomes.
  • Bring expertise from the multitude of disciplines that contribute to the understanding of and formation of solutions to environmental problems, including natural science, social science, humanities, economics, business management, public health, law & policy, ethics, GIS, and statistics.
  • Facilitate translational and reverse translational research at both the individual and population level by creating and strengthening strategic partnerships and resources and engaging members in emerging opportunities and future challenges in the ES/EHS.
  • Foster relationships between CESHH and communities in Mississippi that lead to collaborative engagement among researchers, educators, and citizens to enhance
  • ES/EHS knowledge and literacy and improve health in partner communities.
  • Understand the influence of climate change on emergence, distribution and transmission of infectious diseases, research on air pollutants and human health, or contaminants of emerging concern including pharmaceuticals, preservatives, disinfectants, pesticides and herbicides, etc.
  • Expand ES/EHS research capacity and productivity by providing access to and training in cutting-edge instrumentation, technology, data science and pathologic phenotypic assessment of model organisms.
  • Provide investigators at all career stages valuable opportunities for collaboration, leadership, cross-training, and intellectual enrichment, as well as the foundational funding necessary to compete effectively for extramural research grants.
  • Develop strategies and approaches recognizing the interdependence of the health of humans, animals, and plants and the health of the ecosystems that they share.
  • Engage in and initiate efforts to expand the diversity and inclusion of ES/EHS research and education at JSU and beyond.
  • Inclusiveness and diversity are critical to the success of CESHH and Jackson State University.
  • The selected candidate will be expected to foster an environment that is supportive and welcoming to all.

Other Responsibilities:
  • In addition to serving as Director, this position will hold a secondary, tenured faculty appointment.
