The Director, Cane Navigation will have oversight for the student success function and Cane Navigators for the College of Arts and Sciences. The Director will partner closely with student success leadership and the colleges academic leadership and faculty to ensure alignment and consistency of support services provided to undergraduate students. Working collaboratively with student success, school/college, and campus partners, a holistic student-centered approach will be employed to support students in all aspects of their academic journey.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                                          

•Research and identify best practices in undergraduate student success and advising methodology related to the College of Arts and Sciences.

•Develop student success key performance indicators for the College of Arts and Sciences.

•Collaborate with supervisor, student success partners, and the school/college leadership on student success programs, events, activities, and functions.

•Partner with faculty and peer mentors in school/college for coordinated support of students.

•Provide oversight and leadership for Assistant/Associate Director(s) and Cane Navigators that support the school/college/department.

•Onboard and train team members on school/college/department specific curricula, policies, and procedures.

•Create a work environment that promotes collaboration and sharing of knowledge.

•Assess Cane Navigator use of student success technologies, tools, and dashboards.

•Engage school/college faculty to obtain feedback on service provided by Cane Navigators.

•Participate in ongoing training and professional development programs and support the professional development of team members.

•Mentor, train, and supervise Assistant/Associate directors. Monitor and evaluate performance.

•Provide suggestions for process improvement and assess technological needs.

•Establish and implement school/college/department operational policies and procedures, in collaboration with supervisor, and manage daily operations.

•Adhere to University and unit-level policies and procedures and exercises sound judgment.

•Know and keep up to date on the services, resources, and programs across the University.

•Build relationships and partner with academic and non-academic units (e.g., Counseling Center, Veteran Resource Center, International Student and Scholar Services, Housing and Residential Life, Orientation and Commuter Student Involvement, etc.). Support Cane Navigators in accessing and coordinating service with other units.

•Compile school/college reports and analyze data to ensure data informed decision-making.

•Identify barriers to students’ success, including academic, social, and personal, and support students through overcoming those obstacles by facilitating coordinated referrals to the appropriate campus resources when needed, and follow up with students and campus partner to gain understanding if the student needs additional support.

•Deescalate student concerns or issues and work with relevant offices when needed.

•Develop, monitor, and update degree plans and academic records and regularly track progress and student engagement to ensure a timely graduation.

•Investigate and troubleshoot overrides, registration permissions, course substitutions, advising hold removals, and prerequisite checks.

•Use tools, analytical dashboards, and technology fully to manage student success and student communication, maintain accurate student records, and document student interactions in EAB Navigate.

•Serve on University committees tasked with disseminating student success information.

•Present at meetings, workshops, and conferences for internal and external audiences.

•Assigned to specific cohort of students and assign students to Cane Navigators. Assess workloads and quality of service provided to students and adjust as necessary.

•Provide student success and advising services to support undergraduate student retention and graduation.

•Proactively support students on their success journey and assist them in mapping out their individual pathway to graduation.

•Provide students with information related to services, resources, and programming that enhance the student experience.

•Explain academic policies, procedures, and guidelines and help students navigate the school/college/department and university-level administrative processes.

•Consistent with Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) guidelines, interacts with parents and families of students, faculty, social worker/case management to support students.

•Educate students on co-curricular and experiential learning opportunities (e.g., study abroad, research, etc.)

•Monitor student academic progress and satisfaction.

•Be trained as a career champion through the University’s Toppel Career Center.

•Perform other duties as assigned.

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field. Master’s degree preferred.

Certification and Licensing:

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in advising, counseling and/or customer service is preferred. Any relevant education, certifications and/or work experience may be considered. 
  • Experience leading and developing teams.
