OFFICE OF SUSTAINABILITY (IN-SUST-IUINA)

IU Sustainability seeks to empower and equip staff, faculty, and students with the tools to lead the way in climate action and sustainability. Tasked with reducing the carbon footprint of IU, we collaborate with students, faculty, and staff to ensure our campus makes a positive contribution to our local and global community. Sustain IU identifies and promotes sustainable solutions that reduce environmental impacts while supporting an equitable and prosperous IU, now and into the future. 

The Director of Campus Sustainability reports to the Associate Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Provides operational leadership and coordination to define sustainability methodologies and standards. 
  • Oversees the implementation and management of a comprehensive program to promote a culture of sustainability and stewardship of resources. 
  • Identifies and prioritizes sustainability efforts on the Indianapolis Campus. 
  • Secures grant funding for promotion of efforts.
  • Establishes short-term business plans and long-term operational objectives. 
  • Serves as a campus education resource for sustainability information and issues. 
  • Serves as a campus spokesperson on sustainability programs with internal and external constituents. 
  • Coordinates the implementation and monitoring of the IU Climate Action Plan; manages the IU Climate Action Plan Implementation Committee and sub-committees.
  • Assists with developing comprehensive operational sustainability solutions and programs; specific emphasis on topics outlined in the IU Climate Action Plan - utility relationships, energy efficiency and sourcing, renewable energy, building design and operations, and space management and optimization; align campus sustainability efforts with IU 2030: The Indiana University Strategic Plan.
  • Fosters a culture of sustainability across the campus; identifies areas for operational sustainability efforts and improvements; fosters operational campus sustainability broadly across units. 
  • Assists with sustainability reporting, including AASHE STARS, GHG inventory (SIMAP), and others.
  • Serves as a campus educational resource and subject matter expert for students, faculty, and staff for operational sustainability information, best practices, data, principles, conservation, construction standards, product and equipment selection, and other campus operations sustainability issues.
  • Coordinates communications about campus sustainability across platforms including website, newsletter, social media, and others.
  • Collaborates with and support Sustainability staff from other IU campuses on operational sustainability and climate action efforts. 
  • Creates and nurture positive, productive, cooperative relationships across campus; create positive energy around operational sustainability initiatives; consensus building. 
  • Establishes effective linkages with faculty, staff, students, units, and other organizations across campus and in the community; assists with the coordination of their efforts to advance campus operational sustainability initiatives.
  • Consults with and advises faculty, instructors, and researchers on integrating operational sustainability learning opportunities into research, curriculum, and other academic opportunities for students.
  • Manages office budget; assists with the development and pursuit of opportunities for external funding.
  • Manages professional staff and student interns; monitors work performance; resolves conflicts, solves problems, and issues corrective action as necessary. 
  • Facilitates and encourages staff development, creates an atmosphere of learning; supports a collaborative, empowering, and inclusive team culture.

General Responsibilities

  • Develops and recommends campus-wide policies related to promoting a culture of sustainability.
  • Collaborates with other leaders and operational units across departments to integrate sustainability efforts into areas to include, but not limited to, energy management, operations, maintenance, renovations, grounds keeping, parking and transportation, solid waste management, and cleaning practices.
  • Serves as a campus educational resource for sustainability information, best practices, data, principles, conservation, LEED standards, product and equipment selection, and other sustainability issues.
  • Develops and implements short- and long-term sustainability education programs and the production of educational materials for the campus.
  • Conducts a variety of personnel actions to include, but not limited to hiring, promotion, performance management, and dismissal.
  • Serves as a campus spokesperson on sustainability programs with internal and external constituencies.
  • Identifies and writes grants to procure external funding, and supervises grant-funded projects.
  • Researches and stays up-to-date on new industry sustainability standards; responsible for the implementation of new protocols/procedures to address business needs.

EDUCATION

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, sustainability science, education, policy, or related field. 

Preferred

  • Master's degree in environmental science, sustainability science, education, policy, or related field. 

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 5 years of experience implementing sustainability programs or programs in related field such as planning, environmental or resource management. 
  • 1 year of management experience. 

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Preferred

  • LEED Certification upon date of hire.

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Travel to other IU campuses may be required.
