The Director of Research Administration serves as a member of the Office of Research Administration (ORA) Leadership Team and is responsible for leading an efficient and effective Research Administration support function.

Supervisory Responsibility

  • Act as liaison between the School of Medicine RASR and departmental leadership. Establish and maintain relationships in order to support the oversight of research administration staffing in each department. Ensure alignment and adherence of Service Level Agreements between RASR and departments 
  • Supervise diverse team of 25+ research administration professionals, provide guidance, oversight, and performance management; develop goals and objectives ensuring alignment with SOM-RA's vision, mission and values, formulate strategies, evaluate and communicate performance, promote and facilitate collaboration between RASR, ORA, and departments 
  • Monitor and recommend appropriate staffing levels within each School of Medicine department supported by RASR. Direct and provide oversight of the Sr. Grants and Contracts Manager(s) and Grants and Contracts Managers in the personnel management tasks associated with a large, complex, and diverse group of research administrators 

Provide counsel and support to the Sr. Grants and Contracts Manager(s), Grants and Contracts Managers and Staff who perform the majority of the day-to-day tasks related to research administration, also serving as an expert resource

Administrative Responsibility

  • Direct and oversee the portfolio management to a large number of School of Medicine departments, ensuring their research portfolios are in compliance with federal, state, agency, and institution policies for sponsored projects 
  • Direct efforts to standardize operations within RASR and across SOM departments. Engage and collaborate with relevant stakeholders to identify potential improvements to enhance and expand proactive and responsive service given to departments 

Actively participate in ORA initiatives by participating in ORA Research Administration Leader meetings, policy and process initiatives, lead workgroups and act as a central liaison between ORA offices and RASR

Other Responsibility

  • Determine fiscal requirements and prepare budgetary recommendations for assigned team. Ensure that the budget is monitored and reconciled routinely. Compile data and prepare reports, set forth trends, analyze progress, and make recommendations for resource needs in the future

Minimum Qualifications

Education

BA/BS degree in Business or related field. MS degree in related field or equivalent preferred.


Experience

Ten years of progressive experience with research grants administration experience. and compliance or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience

Skills

  • Demonstrated understanding of a variety of research administration and compliance requirements and regulations
  • Business process analysis competencies including advanced topics with Excel and/or enterprise data management systems
  • Proven track record of active contribution to a senior management team, and providing strategic support across area of responsibility
  • Excellent planning, management and coordination skills, with the ability to organize a demanding workload comprised of diverse and challenging tasks and responsibilities
  • Very strong attention to detail, problem solving skills, and ability to analyze trends
  • Demonstrated experience with evaluation of inefficiencies and the identification of creative and cost-effective alternatives
  • Excellent communication, management and leadership skills
  • Ability to work with diverse groups of people 

Certified Research Administrator (CRA) certification is preferred.
