The Digital Journalist is a writer, reporter, photographer, and videographer, as well as an editor and producer of compelling, timely stories. The position will write, produce and edit original content for AU’s digital and social media platforms to support the university’s strategic priorities and advance institutional communication objectives. This “backpack journalist” will be responsible for creating quick-turn, compelling news content and university stories by researching, developing, and pitching story ideas; setting up and conducting interviews; and producing and posting multiple forms of content for AU News, the AU website, social media, and other university publications. The Digital Journalist will work collaboratively with the media relations team, marketing team, internal communications team, and the schools and divisions to complement and leverage their content and storytelling work. Major goals include increasing the visibility of university leadership, faculty experts, students, staff, and alumni to enhance AU’s reputation and contribute to the sense of community within the university.
The position will support and advance the Challenge Accepted brand/narrative, the Change Can’t Wait fundraising campaign, and the Changemakers for a Changing World strategic objectives by telling institutional stories that strengthen interest, engagement, and pride in the AU community. Key audiences for the digital journalist include, but are not limited to prospective students and families, current faculty/staff/students, alumni, higher education leaders, and influencers. The Digital Journalist will need a strategic approach and an understanding of audience targeting to effectively create content that engages the different constituencies.
