The goal of the Digital Health Humanities program is to guide and equip researchers in their engagement with digital tools and methods to facilitate interdisciplinary scholarship that will advance understanding of the profound effects of illness and disease on patients, health professionals, and the social worlds in which they live and work. In order to extend the reach and use value of UCSF Archives and Special Collections “archives as data” resources through the practical application of innovative analysis and contextualization methods, the DHH Program Coordinator initiates and sustains constructive relationships with researcher-stakeholders (including faculty, students, and staff) as well as DHH instructors and consultants with expertise in computational research methods and archival health sciences collections.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES FOR ROLE:

Building from a pilot curriculum that includes training on how to use computational tools and methods for digital health humanities projects, the DHH Program Coordinator will identify, engage, and collaborate with UCSF and outside instructors on designing learning programs that respond to known and emerging researcher training needs. Digital Health Humanities programming includes the provision of hands-on workshops and asynchronous learning resources for analyzing “archives as data,” especially that from the UCSF archives born-digital and digitized collections corpus, such as the AIDS History Project collections, Industry Documents Library collections, UCSF University Publications, and the COVID Tracking Project. As such, the DHH Program Coordinator will partner with colleagues with collections and data expertise at UCSF to establish and implement standard workflows for deriving, packaging, managing, and providing responsible access to data from archival collections for research use. Participates in scholarly, professional, and service activities that enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion across education, research, library and archives programs, and the profession.

25% Supporting a DHH Community of Practice The DHH Program Coordinator will nurture a community of practice for UCSF scholars who are conducting research at the intersection of health sciences, data science, health humanities, and digital humanities. To advance such research, the DHH Program Coordinator will bring together an interdisciplinary team from diverse UCSF departments to establish consultation services that offer expertise in digital research skills and programming, including project design and management, prototype development, computational methods, and digital publishing and help develop and implement faculty-led research projects. Building upon the success of an inaugural DHH Interdisciplinary Symposium, the DHH Program Coordinator will convene events showcasing DHH and DHH-related research to highlight the possibilities for projects and interdisciplinary collaborations at and beyond UCSF. The DHH Program Coordinator will also actively promote program activities with identified stakeholders and will design and engage in both outreach and assessment planning

35% Grant Project Direction With awarded NEH funding, UCSF Archives and Special Collections will host the Advancing Digital Health Humanities Institute from 2024-2026 to explore various computational methods for ethically working with large-scale collections of digitized and born-digital archival health science materials records for humanistic scholarship. As .35 FTE Project Director for this two-year project, the DHH Program Coordinator will lead in recruiting institute researcher cohort participants, managing and collaborating with the institute faculty and speakers to implement digital health humanities curricular tracks, hosting both onsite and virtual meetings, seminars, and workshops, and coordinating and contributing to institute publications, namely a digital health humanities toolkit, summative whitepaper, and related, topical digital essays.
