Job Description

The Center for Global Discovery and Conservation Science (GDCS) seeks a Communications Specialist to plan, develop, and produce creative, high-quality and cost-effective communications directed towards faculty, students, donors, and the general public, using multiple media and tools including, but not limited to press releases, social media strategies, and web content. This position will be assigned 95% to the Asner Lab (ALAB) and 5% to Center needs. Assists with strategic communications planning for Center and ALAB initiatives. As directed/assigned, serves as project coordinator, writer, and editor for web content and press releases; prepares drafts for review/approval. Interfaces with and conducts regular interviews with faculty, affiliated scientists, community partners, and other Center and ALAB team members to develop stories for publication and web content. Assists with content for the Center and Lab web site and manages updates; ensure timeliness of all information, and coordinates content updates with the Center Director and Assistant Director.

The position is based in Tempe, AZ at the main ASU campus.  Expected hours will be 8 am to 5 pm or as coordinated with supervisor. The position entails cultivating content to maintain and enhance the strategic online presence of the research, updating and enhancing websites, monitoring, and reporting social media and website analytics, contributing to digital communication efforts, assisting with press and media needs, and assisting with tasks related to the capture of audio/video/photographic content.

Salary Range

$40,000 - $45,000 per year; DOE

Essential Duties

  • Develop and execute social media strategies adhering to Center and Lab voice and tone.
  • Researches, modifies, and creates website architecture and content.
  • Reviews web content for accuracy and quality of information.
  • Maintains a social media and website content calendar.
  • Attends Tempe events to conduct real-time social media promotion.
  • Research trends and innovations in digital marketing.
  • Maintains a digital asset library.
  • Researches and develops brand specific and strategic content for targeted distribution over social media channels.
  • Analyzes social media and Web analytics and generates performance reports.
  • Assists with capturing video/audio/photographic content (in person).

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment and two (2) years of related experience: OR, or any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.  Demonstrated experience in writing and editing online content.

  • Evidence of a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, Communications, or Global Management
  • Experience working with the Allen Coral Atlas program now at ASU
  • Evidence of effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience working on Sustainable Development Goals and advancing the 2030 agenda
  • Experience in developing effective social media campaigns
  • Experience leading cross-cultural teams and projects
  • Demonstrated knowledge of online platforms including, but not limited to, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and LinkedIn
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Wordpress, Drupal CMS, and Google Analytics
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Canvas platform and external blog writing
  • Evidence of some science background, such as course work or work experience
  • Experience working in a higher education and/or executive environment
  • Experience in writing press and media needs, including press releases
  • TedX speaking experience

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions
